Windows 10: Windows Won't Update, Stuck on 1607

Hello,


Im having issues updating windows to the 1903 build, I'm stuck on 1607. I have installed a fresh version of 1607. I downloaded the ISO file of 1903 to my desktop, it will run but the update fails at 27%, i then get an error 0x80070020 - 0x2000A The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during PREPARE_FIRST_BOOT operation.


I have tried installing in clean boot mode. I tried using update assistant and media creation tool to update but both fail.


I've tried the troubleshooting app for windows update to repair it. I also did sfc /scannow command and it repaired some system files.


I only have one user profile and it is on the C drive where the OS is installed.



I updated my BIOS and graphics card driver versions to the latest ones.


I've tried running these commands, it didnt help:

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

I'm running an i7-6700k, 16gb ram, GTX 780ti, Samsung Evo ssd 840 pro 62GB free



Any other suggestions would be great thanks.

Maybe I Install a Windows 7 again, At least, all of my games run smoothly ...Sadness!!

Version 1607 trying to update my Windows 10 Professional

It's been 6 Months since 1607 was released and I think the defer time has elapsed.

Windows updates won't install!

I had the same problem when i repaired my O/S, i forgot the steps on how to fixed it, but it is in the microsoft support forum.

You have to reinstall the windows updater, then restart the updating service.
