Have you tried updating the driver via "Device Manager" instead of running the setup ?. I mean unpack the driver (use latest version of 7-zip or WinRAR ), open "Device Manager" , right click on "High Definition Audio Device" , choose update driver and point to the unzipped driver folder.

There maybe also are tools to show that, but it's in the registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion, there the key called "BuildLabEx".

Not yet but I thought doing it with device manager, it will just update the driver without updating the Sound Manager?

What I ended up doing was right click start menu -> Programs and Features, uninstalled Realtek HD Audio and while it prompted to reboot, I said no and ran the setup.exe for the newer version and it installed, then rebooted and all is well.

Thanks, I thought there was another way to display it without opening regedit.

Yes, there maybe is, but I would first have to look up a tool for that. Just looking does not only work without the need to get another tool first, it also will be faster.

I know on my XP machine, it displays the build and version on the desktop with HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion set to 1. Seems to only show the build # and not the entire string.

I would be very careful with manual changes in the registry (and also with so called "cleaners" btw.). Far too many people have already broken their systems that way.

Seems like the registry thing displays only the build # on the desktop which I have used for the past 13 years since XP was on Beta, it's the same info as running winver, couldn't get it to show the actual version #.

Actually, figured it out, just run System Information, it's listed under Hardware Abstraction Layer in the System Summary.

Running System Info -> Hardware Extract Layer under System Summary shows 10.0.10240.16392 for mines. Registry shows 10240.16515.amd64fre.th1.150916-2039 after the update. Wonder where it is getting the 16392 from.

    Edit

    ***UPDATE
This morning after this update failed again I decided to try sfc /scannow. I know, I know, we all hate that suggestion.
    Well,
it worked! (I HATE that it worked). PLEASE let me know if this did or did not work for you.
Open an Admin command prompt (find option by pressing Windows + X keys) > type sfc /scannow and let it run, reboot when finished > manually run Windows Update > success
(note – CBS.log was FULL of errors.)

Thank you, sadly (?) it didn't find any problem to me. I am now trying to manually download the .msu file, let's see what happens (even if I don't have much expectations)

    Thank you!
I've just tried with the manual update, but it failed too. I could guess that there is some driver conflict with the update (many Asus owners have problems).
The funny thing is that I've recently restored the sistem, so my Win10 is with the "should be certified" drivers that it comes shipped with.
For the moment being, I will keep WindowsUpdate Service stopped.
