WinXPalso working on QEMU/KVM with Nero, Minidisc and audio CD mounter

    Hi folks
Finally also got a standard XP PRO SP3 (32 bit) system to work properly on KVM/QEMU with a Minidisk recorder (professional version) , Nero 7 for compiling audio CD (inc from flac) and saving as an audio cd image, being able to mount it recogniseable to windows as an audio CD ("virtual" using the alcohol software image mounter and sound working properly. Sound was a "bit of a dog" to get working but all fixed now.

The minidisc recorder records either as net-md or Hi-MD depending on the Minidiscs used .

So in business -- My VMWare system just kept breaking after latest kernel updates so I'm happy now.

the rest of my legacy harwdare and software working fine -- it was sound and minidisc recorder that gave the most problem. For Browser use firefox if you need to download anything - I actually download on the host and then copy to the VM which is more secure these days when using XP as a VM.

Just a tiny bit more customisation want to change wall paper and add luna black theme and it really is now to VMWare -- Bye Bye !!!!!

For tomorrow -- cloning this all to the 64 bit W2003 server VM I made -- "No rest for the wicked"

    Cheers

  2. qemu-kvm

virt-manager is the gui that can be used to do exactly this.

from the open source project:QEMU is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer.

When used as a machine emulator, QEMU can run OSes and programs made for one machine (e.g. an ARM board) on a different machine (e.g. your own PC). By using dynamic translation, it achieves very good performance.

When used as a virtualizer, QEMU achieves near native performances by executing the guest code directly on the host CPU. QEMU supports virtualization when executing under the Xen hypervisor or using the KVM kernel module in Linux. When using KVM, QEMU can virtualize x86, server and embedded PowerPC, and S390 guests.

M4A to CD audio - Nero on W10 ?? Anybody

    Hi there

    @ClippyBeer

    Thanks for the reply

believe it or not the version of NERO (Version 9) that I have on my XP Windows VM actually does it - creates Audio CD's directly from M4A - provided the file isn't longer than around 80 mins - capacity of a typical Audio CD.

So my workflow is now :

    1) Copy the m4a file from NAS to my music files folder in the XP VM machine
    2) Nero to create Audio CD
    3) Burn to Nero .nrg image file
    4) mount the Nero nrg image file as an Audio cd with the Alcohol 52% "Virtual Mounter program" . I never thought I even had that but it works a treat as it mounts .nrg files as audio cd's if it detects audio files (inc M4A compilations from NERO saved as an audio cd image in .nrg format).
    5) Copy the "CD" to the MD using the MD program MD simple burner
    6) Repeat for as many "CD's" that I want to store on the MD

    Plays perfectly too !!!

    So marking as solved now.

Glad I kept the old XP VM system -- this can't seemingly be done at all on W10 !!!

    Cheers

    qemu-kvm

It will not run under Windows as KVM is a kernel-level virtualization built for the Linux kernel.

It allows remote management (through KVM) using VNC (password optional, but I do recommend one.)

You don't need X installed on the server. You can install X Server on a windows machine, open an X tunnel using SSH, and open virt-manager and it will be displayed on your Windows box. I work with KVM in a business environment and it is a very nice platform (we have something like 8 QEMU/KVM virtual machines in production running on a dual-quad core xeon server with hyperthreading and 24gb of memory). Virt-manager makes it very easy to manage QEMU/KVM but the CLI tools gives you much more control.

I thought it could only run under the architecture it was compiled for.
