Keep in mind that Win8.1 has had time to develop and WIn10 is not officially out yet., Given that I think that Win10 is very close to what Win8.1 is now.

7 still is miles ahead of 8.1. I'll be dual booting between 7 and 10, both are great operating systems. 8.1 was a massive turd without Start8.

And so far Windows 10 is a polished turd. Maybe they have run out of Brasso?

First and foremost > Buyers beware > Absolutely nothing in life is free. If one thinks it's free, then one got tricked into thinking it's free. In this case it may cost a prior Windows OS key.

Yes, obviously. A rather stable, ever expanding company through the years at that. Keyword here is "expanding". Every organism in the world needs to keep growing or rejuvenating, otherwise it dies and withers away. That includes cells, you, me, companies, relationships, etc.

Probably one of the most important departments of any company is marketing, especially research of future markets. In other words, direction in developing products that sell for profit. Don't expand or perpetually perfect a product? Then die off.

Perhaps the on/off of features aren't included until final release. Are they included in a local account also? Not sure for I don't use one. I'd rather use the free services MS offers via MS account, which the advertising supports. This forum site and many other sites might not exist if it were not for advertising. Even the internet may not exist as we know it.

I can understand why some would want to remain anonymous. That should always remain a choice. Not sure, but I would think it may depend on the OS edition of what integrated features can or cannot be off or on, depending on default. Pro or Enterprise editions in the past have more choice and more features. I should think that at least in the Enterprise edition IT or anyone would have the choice to turn off features you speak of. I feel it would be a great distraction in a business office setting.

Otherwise personally I'm not understanding the hullabaloo. We see advertising everywhere. Web pages, magazine/newspapers, billboards, store windows, junk mail, etc. At least I can have it tailored or personalized for my interests via MS account.

That's one choice > Don't use the product just as any other product you or others may not like. There are usually always choices in a free enterprise capitalistic system.

If I'm correct on the Windows 10 editions' features, then there's another choice one may have, but I would research before making a decision.

Is that your own quote or someone else's?

It seems to me the competition created the market tactic in which the general population choose/chose to use. Google being one and the most popular. Made $billions on advertising. That means more people use Google search engine rather than the "evil Bing" MS created. Yeah, that evil Bing > People may get a free OS due to it along with its evil companion Cortana. *Wink

Will the general population or "commoners" know of these features and/or how to turn them off with the edition they choose? Probably not since they'll most likely get the Home edition (if there is one), but I think they could care less. They already use them via the competition, just not integrated. After all, they're just blind sheep being lead astray into that evil system called Capitalism. *Biggrin

    @HippsieGypsie

Here is my idea as I mentioned in another thread. I modified it a little.

Give a free home retail version of 10 for a 365 day sign-up period (Not pro, not enterprise) to anyone who wants it. Then just mail them the disk/flash drive (Saves server load). Businesses would use pro not home. They give students free version of windows pro.

The insiders will still be able to get rtm and newer builds of home or pro depending on which one they want to test and of course they will be activated if associated with a Microsoft account.

Of course the current upgrade scheme for pro/ultimate/student would still work with the home/starter version taken out of the mix. Since anyone could sign-up for a home disk/flash drive to be mailed. You would be able to upgrade or do a clean install from this disk/flash drive.

For my usage I quite like it, fortunately for me I'm not affected by the omission of Media Centre or the like as they're features I never used, but I can see why people will not want W10 solely for those reasons. Print to PDF is a quality addition though.

Or, you just become the product...
    That's just my statements...

I've never stated "evil Bing" or Microsoft for that matter. They are responding to market movement/direction with not only profitability in mind, but also trying to preserve their market share and viability as a company. It's a great business decision, with very little protest from the user community, and chances are that they'll be very successful at this. May take them some time but will dethrone Google as the king of advertisement.

It's one thing to advertise on the web, in the browser, and it is another to do it in the OS. Yes, it's been done before by others, but nowhere nearby the market share that MS has on the desktop. Sooner or later, I'd need to pay for this or later OS, to blast me for ads, and I don't like it. Hence the reason why I'll keep my previous version until I can. By the time the current OS needs to be replaced, I am certain that there will be guidance, software, registry settings, etc., to disable advertisment. Even now, I can disable Cortana but it pretty much slows down W10. The alternative is to disable access to bing.com on my firewall...

And while Linux is a great OS, I'd rather use OSX with MS business apps than Open Office or whatever it's called nowadays. this is not a judgment call, just evaluating my needs...
