What do you think ? It's cheaper ! Problem is that MS ha stopped selling W7 and I think W8/8.1 too. To buy W7 one has to buy it from somebody MS already sold it and all obligations for it's proper function are transferred to that person/organization for installation to computer he is selling or assembling. That seller is solely responsible for it. Any beef may be between that seller and the buyer who bought from him. If for instance that disk is damaged or otherwise not usable you have to take it with seller and they can take it up with MS.

Out of pure curiosity my friend and if this char cater is a a ratbag then I shall report him.

No one in their right mind would fall for that to be honest we shall see if indeed he has crawled out from under a rock because as I think I said I recognised that key as soon as I saw it and he could be Microsofts CEO's son for all I know. *really

I have purchased OEM and Systems Builders licenses for my machines. I'm a long time member of this site, as well as 8 forums and 7 forums.

In fact, i still have a Windows 7 OEM license that is brand new at home. I was in the process of building my machine, bought Windows 7 Pro OEM, then went to a Windows 7 event hosted by Microsoft and scored a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate with a key. So, I used that copy and never touched the OEM license that I bought.

OEM System builder licence terms have changed significantly since Win 7 regarding personal use.

The problem, as I see it, is that it's sold as if retail .. few read the small print.

These licences should, IMHO, be sold exclusively through the partner network.

Well, Microsoft has flip flopped numerous times on the OEM licensing. I know that it was ok in XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8. But it's not OK in Vista, and 8.1. I did some reading today on 10 and it seems that it's not allowed on 10 either.

Overall, I would think people on an enthusiast board would want the retail license, for the simple fact that they will most likely upgrade, and build a new PC and would most likely want to move that OS from the old computer to the new.

Yip..I'm not all that clued up re: Vista but since Win8 there were some drastic changes...

To be fair it was correct as the intention of OEM is for re-sale, just the execution in MS' delivery is lacking...

Yeah, but MS is pretty clear again that OEM/SystemBuilder is not intended for personal use. Unless you are building the machine to sell to another party and continue to support, you should NOT be purchasing the OEM/SystemBuilder license.

  10. No way to enforce it though. Install, enter key, activate, use. Those copies were to easy to buy too. I bought my Windows 7 OEM from Tiger Direct, no questions asked. I didn't even have to buy any other hardware with it. Same deal for NewEgg etc. I keep my hardware for a long time so I wasn't going to transferring be it to another PC. And it was lot cheaper than buying the full retail. << The usual reason people chose it over Retail version.

And the thing is, the exact reason why an OEM license is cheaper is because Microsoft is under no obligation to provide any support for it at all. So there is no legitimate reason to complain about it when Microsoft refuses to provide support.

  12. Yep, buy OEM system builders and you are your tech support. Talking to yourself doesn't usually help though. *Wink

LOL...not that MS' outsourced support is worth paying for anyway...but transferability is.

  14. Transferability is likely the biggest reason somebody opts for full retail over OEM.

But it's not like Microsoft strictly enforces non-transferabilty. Just look at what they opened up with linking digital licenses to Microsoft Accounts.
