Windows 10: wuauserve service would not restart, PIN login failed

Helping an elderly couple via phone to get their new Win10 laptop from Sams Club out of S-mode. what follows is all from a phoncon with 80 yr old user.


In Activation settings, Switch to Windows 10 Home > Go to Store link, clicking on Get resulted in failure twice. Read online that restarting the wuauserv services would do the trick. Could only stop it... wouldn't restart.


Rebooted and now the PIN login only Login owner setup is broken. Gave an option to go to the Store to find an app to help, but that turned into an endless loop.


Any suggestions at this point. I plan to go fetch the laptop from this nice lady and, keeping my distance, get them back up and running.

OSK PIN login on non-touch device

I suggest you to create a PIN for your device and try the on screen keyboard to login to the same.

You may follow the steps below to create PIN protection for your device.

• 
  Go to Settings and select account.
  
• 
  Click on sign in option and Go to PIN option.
  
• 
  Now click on Add and set PIN for login.
  

You can use the same PIN to login to your device using the on screen Keyboard from ease of access option and verify the result.

Unable to login using The login PIN

Thank you for contacting Microsoft community.

I suggest you to follow the below steps to change the pin and check fi it helps.

• In the login page next to “PIN password option”.
• You will find “Other sign in options”, click on it will prompt you for regular password.
• Enter regular password and login to the computer.
• I suggest you to click on the Start Menu
  and select settings.
• Now select Accounts.
• Next select the tab Sign-in option.
• Under the “PIN tab” click on “ADD” option.
• It will prompt you for current pin password and new password, please provide
  new password then apply the changes, restart
  the computer and check if it works.

The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in. User profile cannot be loaded.

Hello,

When attempting to login to my computer, I get the following message:

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in.

User profile cannot be loaded."

I referred to this Help article,You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error
message,

but the only difference is I only have one user profile on this computer. So, I can't login with another user to go through the steps listed in this post.

Any suggestions?
