Windows 10: Xbox Insiders Get Ready for the Next Xbox One Home Experiments Xbox

In July we introduced Xbox Insiders to an evolving Home experience. Xbox engineers have taken user research and feedback to create a faster Xbox One Home dashboard! We know you’re curious what these experiments have all been about, and we have info on new updates happening now!

Why We Are Experimenting

Xbox engineers are seeking feedback and support from Xbox Insiders to ensure each iteration of Home is fast, responsive, and easy to use.

The removal of tabs (or as we call them, “twists”) in August allowed Xbox engineers to focus on improving memory and performance with an easier to navigate Xbox One Home dashboard. In September we introduced more tiles that linked users to features across the console such as Game Pass, the Store, and Mixer. Users were also given the functionality to change and move around visible tiles to customize the dashboard for their needs!

These previous releases were in smaller waves unlike other features released to Xbox Insiders. Xbox engineers had the chance to understand how the Xbox community used the Xbox One Home dashboard and how it can be improved. These changes opened many doors for us, and it’s gotten our creative juices flowing! Our goal is to give you the optimum experience on Xbox One—from startup to shut down.

What’s Next for the Xbox One Home Dashboard

Xbox engineers were performing “AB” experiments in previous releases. This means that a random selection of our Xbox Insider audience received the new changes, while others were the control group with the standard Home experience.

We are doing things a little differently with this next phase, starting with what we call “ABC” experiments. Three groups are randomly selected for two versions of Home experiments, while a third group is our control group.

This new phase starts today, Thursday, October 17th! Xbox Insiders from Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead are eligible for these Home experiments and may see the changes with the latest preview update.

Alpha Skip-Ahead users should update to their latest preview OS build, which will be made available at 2 p.m. PT today, before determining if you have the new Home experience. (Release notes found here.)

Alpha’s preview update from yesterday has prepared Alpha devices for this new phase. Try power cycling the Xbox One console before determining if you have the new Home experience.

“ABC” Experiments for Home

Group A will see four new content blocks for what the twists were previously. This dashboard will look similar to previous Home experiments.

Group B will have a single button under their main dashboard tile for My Games & Apps, rather than the four content blocks Group A will experience.
Note: Changes to tiles during previous Home experiments do not carry over with new iterations.
Those in Group C (our control group) are just as important in this process! You’re providing us data on the current performance of the Xbox One Home dashboard we all see today. Your data shows how successful our work is for you.

Each step we take with the Xbox One Home dashboard allows us to adjust the placement and user-friendliness of buttons and tiles, increase visibility of console features, optimize dashboard and menu commands, and transform Home into the hub for all things Xbox! Groups A and B are chosen at random from select Xbox One Update Preview rings. The Xbox Insider Team cannot influence who is chosen for these feature releases.

Follow these steps to find out which preview ring your console is enrolled into:

Launch the Xbox Insider Hub on your Xbox One console

Select Insider content

Choose System, then select Xbox One Update Preview

Select Manage

Your current preview ring will be displayed there

Xbox Insiders Help validate Xbox Live PC sign-in experience Xbox

**UPDATE 1/25 3:00 PM PT** added note that this is only available in the US region.

We’ve released a new test app to validate the Xbox Live PC sign-in experience. As an Xbox Insider, you can help us by downloading the app from the Store and running it on your Windows 10 PC, which should only take a few minutes.

Your PC needs be enrolled in the Windows Insider Fast ring on build 18317 or better to access the Xbox sign in test app in the Xbox Insider Hub. The Xbox sign in test app is only available in the US region.

Follow the steps below and complete the “PC Sign-In” quest in the Xbox Insider Hub to earn double the XP!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

On your Windows 10 PC, sign in and launch the Xbox Insider Hub app (or install it from the Store first if necessary).

Go to Insider content > Apps and select Xbox Sign-In.

Select Join.

Wait for the registration to complete to be redirected to the Store.

Install the Xbox sign-in test app, launch it, and follow the instructions in the app.

Return to the Xbox Insider Hub and complete the “PC Sign-In” quest to earn double XP (20).

Space is limited and the app will disappear from the Xbox Insider Hub once we reach our participation limit.

New Xbox Insider Hub experience is coming to Xbox Insiders Xbox

Greetings Xbox Insiders! The Xbox Insider Program is on the cusp of something exciting, and we want to bring you along for the ride. We want to demonstrate our commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and of course, listening to you! We are pleased to announce that work has begun on a new version of the Xbox Insider Hub – one with the goal of being faster, better organized, and simpler to navigate, all with a different yet familiar user interface. This isn’t just an update to the current Hub, this is an all new app built from the ground up.

One of the most frequent pieces of feedback we hear about the app itself is that new content and updates are hidden behind too many button clicks, so we’re creating this new Xbox Insider Hub with the goal of getting you to the content you care about faster. This is an Xbox Insider Hub that you have already helped design through your feedback to us. We want to continue that cycle of feedback and will be inviting you to flight it when we have a build ready in the next few months.

Along with this new Xbox Insider Hub, you may notice several service changes that we’re making in order to accommodate the new development. This includes the ways in which we’ll be asking for your feedback on experiences across Xbox. As a matter of fact, many of you have already noticed one of our first changes and filed a few bugs about it. (Thank you! We love that you’re watching!)

To create a simpler experience, one of the first things we’re changing is the way we use surveys. If you look at all the ways we ask you a question and then get feedback, you’ll notice three very similar vehicles used in the past: the Survey, the Quick Poll, and the Rating. In essence, these three things are the same:

A Quick Poll was simply a one question survey.

A Rating was also a one question survey, shown in a special way.

The Survey is a well understood thing: As a question, or multiple questions, and get an answer from the people who care the most.

We’ve decided that combining all three of these tools into one, the Survey, would make the most intuitive sense. In the past, each of these different types had their own distinct use and designation within Xbox Insider Services (the back-end software that powers the Xbox Insider Hub). Because we have the opportunity to make positive changes to the way our services call these feedback types, we’ve begun deprecating (removing) the Rating and the Quick Poll types, in favor of broader usage of the plainly named “Survey.”

You’ve probably noticed a pattern to both Ratings and Quick Polls. Ratings were star based – choose one answer from a list of between one and five stars. Quick polls were multiple choice, allowing you to choose one answer among a list of multiple choices. Surveys, however, could be one question or multiple, could have branching logic, and could be answered with freetext, multiple choice, multi-select, or other creative means. Ratings and Quick Polls had very specific uses, which is why they were created as their own type. As the Xbox Insider Hub has evolved, so too has the survey functionality to encompass everything these two other types included.

It will take some time for us to incorporate Surveys in the way we used Ratings and Quick Polls in the past, which in transparency means a temporary period where those quick, 5 XP awards won’t be available. Once we have this transition work done, you’ll begin to see the new surveys used in nearly the same way as Ratings and Quick Polls, though their location will be slightly different. We always encourage you to use Report a problem for bug reports or to alert us when you encounter anything unexpected. Because Ratings won’t be used in quite the same way in the future, it is even more important to use Report a problem to let us know about any quality issues that you experience.

As always, we welcome your feedback. The roadmap for this new Xbox Insider Hub is expected to take us into the first part of 2020, and as above, we’re planning to allow you to test a build once we have one ready to show. Keep watching the Blog and the r/XboxInsiders subreddit for more info.
