When I try to save files via certain apps, I get an error saying I can't save it there and asking whether I'd like to save it in Documents instead but get same error there. This issue is happening on my Microsoft Surface 4 running Windows 11, but does not happen in the same situation on other Windows PCs running Windows 11 nor my MacBook. I'm an admin and the sole account on the PC. The error seems to occur for all the standard folders that appear in This PC, including Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos. But I'm able to create my own folders and other files e.g. txt in

    :)

  2. "You don’t have permission to save in this location" on Surface

    Hi chawke,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

The message "You do not have permission to save in this location" is displayed, indicating that the account currently logged in to the system does not have relevant permission. But I noticed that you compared the same folder Settings on the Surface to other computers, which is a little weird.

I think you can try to manually grant all permissions to disk C of the Surface and see if you can save files anywhere on disk C by following the steps below.

    1. Open Explorer, right-click the disk C, and then click "Properties"

"You don’t have permission to save in this location" on Surface 12f6d13b-8f89-4a52-83e5-9fa7aa23fd0e?upload=true.png

    2. Select the account name you are currently using and click "Advanced"

"You don’t have permission to save in this location" on Surface 6c1b68f4-775a-4535-aa13-bd30bd8a102a?upload=true.png

    3. Select your account name again in the new window and click "Change" (the UAC control permission will appear at this time, please select Allow)

"You don’t have permission to save in this location" on Surface e834f34a-f7e2-473f-9515-24bb1048be9f?upload=true.png

    4. Enter "Everyone" and click OK to exit, and open the application (under C drive) that was prompted for permission before to see if it can run.
"You don’t have permission to save in this location" on Surface 5c2a5a55-797e-4e9e-a18a-be56c55d90e2?upload=true.png

After completing the above operations, disk C will be granted read/write access to all users. Considering that there is only one administrator account on your Surface, there is no security problem with this operation. You can rest assured to operate it.

BTW, may I ask if your Surface model is Surface Pro 4?

The Surface Pro 4 is not actually one of the Surface models supported by Windows 11.The Windows 11 upgrade is not supported mainly because of driver and compatibility issues. (I mean the Surface Pro 4 can install Windows 11 but may have some problems with drivers and compatibility issues.)

Please feel free to let me know how it goes.

    Best Regards,

You dont have permission to save in this location...

This is a process but it worked for me:
You can follow these steps for one folder or go here to make sure your folder is shared with Everyone
1.Right click on the folder that you can't access and click share with >specific people
    2. Click add and then enter Everyone for a user name
    3. Click read permissions where it says read to read/write
    4. Click share, click done

    1. Right click properties on the folder you can't access
    2. Click advanced.
    3. Click change owner
    4. Type Everyone for the owner and select owner reset to full control.
    5. close properties
    6. Then click on the save file box and choose the default folder you want to save to in the open dialog box.
With a new owner with full control of everything and sharing it should work if you followed this completely. Worked for me. *Shock
