Windows 10: You would think Microsoft games would work in Win 10

It seems Microsoft Links 2003 is an incompatible program as no compatibility mode gets it to work for me (have to run it in windowed mode and even then it crashes) and even Microsoft Flight Simulator X won't run right. Glad I kept Win 7 on a separate partition. I'll be spending the vast majority of time there and only coming back to Win 10 on occasion to do updates and see if they've made it more compatible.

That game is 14 years old. (it came out the year before the one in the title).

You're judging it off a preview release as well? Sometimes I sympathize with Redmond, I do *Smile

 

craigwf, your System Specs shows 16GB RAM which means you are running the 64-bit version of Win10. Many programs from back in the WinXP days can't run on 64-bit. WinXP did have a 64-bit Professional version but it didn't seem very popular due to a lack of programs that could run on it. I have a copy I never used because by the time I could get 64-bit hardware I had to run Vista on it. Some of the older programs that directly controlled hardware such as simple card games don't work and any 16-bit programs aren't supported. I have way too many CDs I've saved and would have to go back to 32-bit WinXP or may Vista to use them. The discs do make a good distraction to deer when hung on a clothesline.

 

How can you expect a game from 2003 to work on Windows 10?

 

With 16gb it is a reasonable assumption that he is running the x64 version but not absolute - it won't install it by default. In any case there's probably more to it than that - such as the fact that it is a 14 year old game on a preview version of Windows 10 *Smile

If you are that attached to it Craig there is probably an easy solution, the Pro version of 10 comes with Hyper-V, install XP in a VM, run your game(s) in that. Believe me a game that old will run just fine in a VM. And with 10 you can even use Virtual Desktops with your Virtual Machines so you can switch back and forth just like you had a KVM switch, except it is all on the same PC. You've got a system that can handle it.

 

Heck,, run Xp in a VM and run the game there?? :shrug:

 

My FSX runs just fine. Plus I couldn´t activate it on win8.1 and now with win10 it just activates normally!
