  1. Zips files will not open

I recently upgraded to Windows10 on my desktop Dell. Last week I attempted to unzip some files & open .tif files that had been saved when I was still running Windows 8.1. Previous to the upgraded I never had a issue unzipping these files and they are always from the same company. Have spent the last week trying everything to open them with not luck.

I used WinZar and 7-zip for the zip files but keep getting a error message.
I used every program on my computer that would open these files. Previous to update I used Irfanview and never had a issue.

My thought is that maybe during the upgrade something happened to the files as a few of the .tif files that had already been open will now not open in any program. I attempted to convert those using a online program that they failed also.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    :)

    Zips files will not open

Hello, if you could provide a screenshot with the error message someone might be able to distinguish between, say, possibly corrupt files, possibly inaccessible files, and any other sort of possibility. You could even upload one as an attachment..

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I have attached one of the zips. There are about 20 files in the zip folder to open and the message is always the same. digis_#3.zip

The .tif's will not attach. Error message: Invalid file. I attempted at least 10 different ones with the same issue. These .tif are always sent from the company in the same file format so not sure what has suddenly caused the issue.

You may have to reassign the file association to 7-zip.

@swarfega- SimplyAnnoyed has used 2 programs, so I'm assuming that means trying to open the files from those programs. Hence my query about the error message and asking for a screenshot. I.e. we need clarification first..
Similarly he's tried different programs with some tifs.
@SimplyAnnoyed: - your file contains a png, and the CRC is invalid- i.e. not a correct file.

Again, could you please provide a screenshot of an example showing the error msg?

You seem to have two problems-
    - opening certain zips - but you can open others
    - opening some tif files - but you can open others

This suggests some files are corrupted.

Can you also upload one of your problem tifs?

I suggest you try this to be on the safe side:
Assuming your files are on C: then:
    From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

    - else do that for the appropriate drive or partition.

Ran chkdsk C: /F and that is clear. Nothing needed to be fixed.

I have attempted again to upload a .tif with no luck and keep getting the same error message as stated.

I missed this in your reply. Often the company will send them in png as these are digital images/stamps that can be resized for use. So I've often received a file that contains both so again clueless what is causing this to not open. grrr.

As far as I can make out, you have a source of corrupted files.

You say your error message is Invalid file. I understand that to apply to the tifs - but the zips are corrupted (witness the one uploaded giving a CRC error. I can't see how I can help as these are files from a specific source.

I would check with the source as to their validity.

  10. Okay.
Isn't there a way to fix corrupted files?
Otherwise I guess I will have to contact the person whom I purchased these from.
    Thank you for your help.

No, although there are some utilities that claim to do so. Repair implies sufficient redundancy, or fixing with damage to content so the format meets the standard.

I would check with the source as to their validity.

  12. Thanks so much. I had read about these utilities but didn't want to go ahead and use one without knowing if they actually worked.
I will contact the person I purchased the images from and see if they can/will do something about it.

    Have a great weekend.

    Zips files will not open

I skimmed through the above, so please forgive me if I missed anything important:

I downloaded the zip file (digis_#3.zip file size about 750KB) and tried to open this file with WinZip. Error happened.
I renamed the file to a .rar and opened it with WinRAR. The file opened, yet WinRAR told me there's an error. I see that the packed size of the only file that I see in there (called fancy.png) is about 2,200KB big. This implies that this zip file should be at least that big.

So in conclusion, that zip file above is an incomple file; the zip file should be at least about 2 megabytes big
