Windows 10: An app default was reset. 11/14/16 Problem .file defaults

I was on my computer last night tell about 2300 PT turned if off for the night/next day. booted it back up around 1700 the next day found about 20 of these (An app default was reset) setting in the notification area. When i click on action center and then on the notification all it does it take me to Windows settings. This happens with all 20 of them but on the little collapse area of the Notificion i see things like .it .wpl .tts .wpa .mts .mpv2 etc etc... what happened over night that i keep getting this?

Default app setting keeps resetting with notification of problem with default app setting

Same here...I started having the problem after the 2/13/16 Windows 10 Update. The App reset continues to repeat non-stop when I play a video file. The message is "An App default was reset". "An app caused a problem with the default app setting for AVI
files for .MOV files so it was reset to "Movies and TV". It does the same thing for .AVI files.

Solution?

Regarding Method1:

SFC returned with the message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."

This method did NOT fix the problem. Apps are still broken.

Regarding Method 2:

DISM returned with the following:

Step 3 of the DISM instructions is to run "sfc /scannow". Running SFC returned with NO ERRORS FOUND.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

The final step (4) of DISM instruction is to "run
Windows Update again".

I am not sure that I should run the Windows Update because that is what caused the problem in the first place and I do not have any indication that the problem has been repaired.

Thanks Brink, I did that and i found out that it reverted all my video files (.avi .MKV.ext blah blahs) back to windows app as default. I cant go into VLC>interface>operating system integration>file extensions association and set up association anymore. it tells go to setting default app now. once there i found out i can change one over to another program but cant change the one inside [Choose default apps by protocol] something called movies & TV, it only allows me to pick windows app or search store for an app. Im not just going though all my old files and opening them from now on with VLC and allowing

 

In that case, you could try doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened since it just recently happened.
