    another problem with upgrade

Thanks to this forum I was able to upgrade my Win 7 to 10. But, now another problem has me stumped. My new Win 10 works great UNTIL it updates. I go to shutdown the computer and am told not to shut it down as updates are being downloaded and installed. I wait about 1/2 hour until it's done. The next time I boot up the start button no longer works. Tried a few suggestions that I found with Google but none work. Did the upgrade again with the same result. Updates are killing the start button i Think. I'd hate to turn off the updates. I'm doing the upgrade keeping all my files. I keep everything backed up so I'm thinking that maybe do a clean upgrade and reinstall my apps and files before the updating and start looking for a conflict of sorts. Any ideas I might try before doing that? Thanks guys

    :)

  2. Cannot play Mahjong and folder saved on desktop is lost in Windows 10

Original Title:Lost 2 items after download

Since I downloaded the free Windows 10, I can no longer get into the Mahjong I had on my computer. It was the version that originally came with my computer. I get a message that the program isn't there.

Also, I totally lost a folder on my desktop containing old family photos I had scanned going back to the 1800's. I cannot find the folder and/or pictures anywhere on my computer. I spent days scanning photos.

I really hate Windows 10 and want to remove it from my computer.

    Hi. Great to hear. *Smile
Start/Taskbar/Notification not working is a common problem lately. What have you tried so far?
You mean you went back to W7 and upgraded to W10 again?
Once a computer has been upgraded, and activated, there is no need to "upgrade" anymore. The activation is stored on the MS servers, and you can clean install W10 as often as you like/need.

If you're okay with a clean install, and have all your data backed up, you could go ahead and do it. You'll probably find W10 will run much better with a clean install.

Yes, I went back to 7 using my partition backup with Macrium Reflect. Then I tried the upgrade again only to have the same problem again AFTER updates are downloaded and installed, It works great until then. Then after the updating when I boot up the start menu no longer works. No tiles or apps. Also I noticed that when I right click on something it takes a looooooog time for the menus to open. I'm going to try a clean install. I haven't tried updating my drivers yet for 10. I'll bet that will be fun. I remember going to 7 from XP and that wasn't fun trying to get drivers for my OS, scanner and printer.

    another problem with upgrade

I did the clean install. Then I saved my C partition with Macrium to a flash drive without any apps installed. The computer was working OK. Start menu worked. Right clicking was normal. My next step was to do the updates with nothing installed on the computer. I don't know if I mentioned that it is an older HP G62 with 6 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig drive. Took quite a while to do the updates. The first set of updates didn't affect the computer. Then there was an OS update to version 1511. Not sure if that is the correct number. That took a long time to do. After it was done the computer wouldn't restart. Left it for a couple of hours until I finally had to do a hard shutdown. After restarting the start button no longer worked....again. Also WiFi was gone. Right clicking was again VERY slow. I couldn't open a picture that was on my flash drive. Task manager wouldn't open. So, I decided to reinstall the backup of the C partition before the updates that I downloaded right after installing the OS. Did that but was surprised to find the start button didn't work plus the other things I've mentioned. I made the backup while the start button was working. I've never seen this kind of thing before and I've been doing this since Win 95. I've always said that Macrium was the best piece of software on the planet. It has been an answer to problems many, many times, but not this time. It's very clear. The updates are the problem. Now I will do another clean install BUT this time I'm going to disable the updates.

When you did your clean install of Windows 10, then made your image backup using Macrium Reflect.... You only backed up your C-drive?? When I do an image backup, I do a Complete Image Backup, Not just my C drive. Next time make a complete image backup, Include all your partitions, not just your C-drive, some of those partitions contain files Windows might need to run its OS. and boot correctly, in some cases.

Next thing you wrote was then you upgraded to version 1511 ?? If you downloaded the correct ISO for Windows, it should have installed version 1511 not the older version of 10240. Unless I am misunderstanding something???
Clean install using the latest ISO should have installed Windows version 1511 for you.

OldMike65, I've never had to backup any other partitions except C drive to save for a successful reinstall. I've done it probably a thousand times on my own computers an others I have helped. It's always worked. I have Win 7 backed up and can reinstall it with no problem which I did after Win 10 did not want to work right. As for the Win 10 ISO download I never had a choice of a version to download. I remember a window with a few choices like win 10 , win 10n. Something like that. Then I had a choice of 32 or 64 bit. Right now as I write this I'm waiting for a validation to download Win 10 from the link in the info you gave me. But, it can't be this hard. I can't imagine someone trying to upgrade their computer by clicking on the upgrade icon in the tray that has very little knowledge of how computer work. I did some Googleing and a lot of people are having my same problems. It shouldn't be that tough to upgrade. Just checked...still no validation for the download. It's been about 15 minutes.

Wow, so your back on Windows 7 !!! and trying to upgrade??? I assumed you were on Windows 10 <--- and trying to do a Clean Install !!! You should and don't have to wait for any validation sir. When going to that Windows link you should just choose your Windows 10 version, and download it. No waiting for validation at all. I did not know you were back on Windows 7, you never told me that in the last few msgs. This is different then. Assuming you are having to wait for a validation, then go back to that link you used, and try using Option 2 instead of option 1. Windows 10 using Media Creation Tool, maybe this option will work better for you. Option 1 should have worked thou.
Their is another option you could try, but not sure if you want to try this method or not.
Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First - Windows 10 Forums

This method above thou can be more difficult to use and understand for some users. That's why I didn't offer this method.
I would prefer you use the easier methods and not this one, but its your choice.
Their are different methods you can use to upgrade to Windows 10. Clean install does work the best, for most people.
Like I said, I assumed you were ON Windows 10 now, and wanted to do a clean install. You still should not be having all these problems thou. For that I am sorry.

Just as a side-note, Mike. I've been getting that validation thingy with the spinning dots myself when I go to the Tech Bench ISO download link. In fact it occurs twice, once after selecting edition and again after selecting language. Mine validates within a few seconds however. Then it offers 32-bit or 64-bit and advises that those links are good for 24 hours. It seems to be something new I've noticed over last month or so (not that I try it every week, though).

Thanks Word Man, as I have never run into that myself. But I havn't tried to download one recently. It was always quick and painless. I am surprised that this user is having so much trouble. Darn it!!! MS should not be making it this hard for any user to upgrade their OS. Thanks for letting me know Word Man. *Eek

Wow, this should not be so difficult. I am so sorry. As OldMike says, the most recent ISO from TechBench should give you version 1511 from the get go. And, as I said, once W10 is installed and activated on a system, it can be reinstalled as often as you like/need, so you don't ever have to go back to W7 and start all over.

I did just try the TechBench site, and got an error; said it couldn't log me in right now. Not sure what that's all about. I was going to try and get you a download link.
