  1. Can not declare IE 11 as default program

Yes, search in Win10 can be hit-or-miss. If that method doesn't work, I use the Explorer search, but if I really want to find something, dir is the tool. But then I still have to figure out how to launch these universal apps *Tongue

Did the other app tutorials help with the Store issue?

All other MSO pgms launch HTML links fine - right, it's just Outlook and only in recv'd mail - right?
It's not a ctrl-click the link thing is it?

Another member is going to be more help to you on Outlook (if they show up *Wink), but I am enjoying the conversation and trying to help with other issues (the Store & Feedback) as they crop up.

I'll keep thinking about the issue, maybe search again - but you seem to have tried the low hanging fruit.

SFC didn't find anything, perhaps Dism will repair Outlook and the link association.

    Try this:

Open an elevated Command Prompt (right click, Run as administrator)
    Enter the following command

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Post if there are any errors on the screen after it runs.

Full tutorial: DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Windows 10 Forums
The only other thing I can think of is to install Outlook 2010 on top of what is installed or re-install it.

Hi, Bill -- I know I'm not alone in appreciating the effort you've put into this. The problem is really perplexing. You're right, it's only hyperlinks in Outlook that launch this dreaded screen:

Can not declare IE 11 as default program [IMG]

(BTW, does this look kind of like something we used to see in Win XP -- or even Win 3.1?)
The other MSO programs launch IE11 just fine. Everything, including Outlook, works properly if you choose a default browser other than IE.

Augmenting the click with Ctrl, Shift, or Alt doesn't work. I've tried DSIM and reinstalling MSO. That didn't work either. I've tried using the windows reporting tool, and, so far, there's no way to know if anybody even read that! I'm about to give up.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say was thanks for the research and suggestions.

  3. You're welcome and thank you SoopaNutz,

I was loosing track of things (if default to another browsers worked)- you put together a very nice synopsis.
Another 'lost track' was turning off IE 11 in Pgms & Feats > Turn Windows features on or off.
    restart the machine
Turn IE 11 on in Pgms & Feats.

It's another long shot and there might be a tricky order of things (IE, dism, OL, SFC)
but those would be workarounds to an issue that MS is best able to fix.

Outlook is running and this is one feature, albeit an often used feature - let's call it a main feature, that isn't working.

MS knows about the issue, both IE and OL are their products, even if it's OL 2010. I'm sure there are lots of installs out htere and MS cannot expect everyone to purchase a newer version. They could give everyone a new version or fix the issue with regards to IE.

I'm curious on the resolution, so I'll keep an eye on the thread, but I really can't think of anything else than what I've posted.

Can not declare IE 11 as default program

I entered the problem with IE11 and Outlook into Windows Feedback under Apps>Office - Outlook (Desktop). Maybe if more of us did that also, it would alert them to the problem and maybe they will do something about it.

Basically, this problem is the only stopping me from installing Windows 10 on my desktop which I consider my production system and my wife's laptop.

I use Outlook 2010 and I had it set to open every link in Edge, but I have since change it to open using Firefox and it works just fine. What SlartyBart posted should fix it I would think.

Hey, Caveman. That's good advice. I just followed it. We can only hope!

If you'll read through the thread, you'll see that it works with any browser OTHER than IE11. SlartyBart's suggestions were great reasonable, and logical ones, but they didn't work for IE11. I'm using FireFox with my Win 10 machines right now, too, although I'd like to use IE.

EDGE and Firefox are not the problem. It is using IE11 as the default that has the problem.

If you read Slartbart's post, he states that "Outlook is running and this is one feature, albeit an often used feature - let's call it a main feature, that isn't working."

Sorry. I see someone already reponded to Gary but I don't see a way to delete this post.

  9. I was helping another member solve an upgrade issue, he mentioned OL 2010.

I asked him to test IE and links in rcv'd mail, the tests on his machine were successful. He offered some suggestions here:
    New 4TB drive install.. - Page 9 - Windows 10 Forums

You might have tried some of those, but I don't recall if the others have been offered. I also gave him the link to this thread, so he might come over to help further if those suggestions do not bear any fruit.

Are you sure your friend tried clicking a hyperlink in an OL 2010 email while IE11 was set as the default browser? I have yet to hear from anyone for whom this works as expected. You can, of course, open the link in IE11, but only (as far as I can tell) by going through the nag screen. I've spoken with a lot of people who have this problem. Oh, well, not a problem for me any more: I switched to OL 2013 (as part of Office 365 Business).

Anyway, thanks again for the help you've tried to give us.

I did the scannow and had no errors, I did the winsock reset/restart - same problem. I am running OL2003 on the Win10 machine and that Options is different than OL2010 so I cannot see a place to disable to the options. Any suggestions.

    Thanks for the help.

I had already done the scannow but did it again anyway followed by the winsock reset. It made no difference at all. I then disabled the add-ins in OL and it also made no difference at all. In OL2007 you go to Tools/Trust center to get to the add-ins, not sure about 2003.

I found out where to disable the add-ons in OL2003 using Google. I disabled the add-ons and it made no difference.

    Hi,

Bill (SlartyBart)has asked me to pop in and say hello.........Hello!!

I have just done a clean install on a new 4 TB drive and installed Office 2010 I use Outlook for my emails, I do not get the screen that asks you what you want to open links in anymore. I set this for Edge, it opens my emails every time without showing the screen. On doing the link tests with Bill I could also open the links in IE11..If there is something from the Reg you want me to copy for you and paste here I will gladly help you out... BTW I only updated the drive because my other was getting full, and that was an upgrade from 8 - 8.1 - to W10 .....And yes emails were working on that drive also...

Just a thought is anyone using Nortons?? This has been causing some people problems....I am now running Nortons, However I did not install it until everything was working properly....

    Regards -Len

    Hi Len,
Welcome and thanks for dropping by. I think everyone who has this problem is OK if they select Edge or Chrome or any other browser as the default. That is they don't get the pop up box asking what browser we want to use. That's certainly my problem. It is only when we select IE11 as the default that we get the pop up every time. I don't think it's anti virus related as I've disabled mine in the past and it made no difference.
