Windows 10: Can't update Windows 10 Anniversary

Okay so Windows Update is not getting "fixed"; Troubleshooter says it fixes things, but they are not fixed. Powershell updated Defender. Both errors refer to problems with Windows Update. Reset didn't work, in-place repair didn't work, sfc and dism didn't work...

As for the Windows Defender Update error screenshot, it's quite possible that an update will come through once, then fail, because you already have a newer update. At that point, it should not come through again.

Clean install is the last resort. I know you said you did this once before, but not sure if the data drive was thoroughly cleaned at that point? If your data is backed up and you're sure it's clean, I would like to try something before we clean install - if you're willing:

Also, just wanted to mention; we have a program available here from one of our developer-members, which will grab your Windows key:

But, you won't need it for the clean install. Once a system has seen Windows 10 installed and activated, W10 can be reinstalled as many times as you like/need, and the activation for that system resides on the MS servers. So once you get online, it will be activated automatically. And, there is no need to install W8 and re-do the upgrade. You can go directly to W10 on bare metal.

 

OK. I have it downloaded and ready to go. I had previously already made a bootable flash drive with the most recent Win10 build so ready as I can be.

 

I had previously already used a program called Produkey-x64 to track down my windows 10 key because I encountered that issue last time around. But I thought I would try the new one and make sure the key I found was the same (which it was). But when I ran it, I got this error.. I didn't IGNORE or ALLOW the issue, but just closed the defender page. I have a feeling its clean and defender is just trying to protect the registry as this is a kind of exploit tool or whatever you want to call it so I wasn't too worried but I thought I would bring it to your attention. See what came up.

 

I just downloaded and ran it on a system with ESET installed, no issues.

Windows Repair Tool by Tweaking.com
When installing, select "make shortcuts available to all users" and "create desktop icon" (default).
Let the program open, to make sure it's installed properly.

• All data is backed up right? *Wink
• Disconnect all external peripherals from the system; nothing but mouse, keyboard and monitor connected (wired preferred).
• Verify there are no bangs in Device Manager.
• Verify Fast Startup is OFF.
• Create a restore point if able. (At this point, you would normally make a Macrium system image of the entire drive, so you can go back and start over if things go south. In your case, however, a clean install is next on the list, so a system image is not necessary.)
• Reboot to Safe Mode.

Once in safe mode, run the System File Checker:







Advise the results. The preferred result is “No integrity violations found”.

Go to Step 3, and check the disk for errors.







If a chkdsk is required, go ahead and schedule it for next boot. Then reboot the machine and let it run.

Back in Safe Mode:

Go to tab Step 2, and open the Pre-Scan.







Click Start Scan. When it’s finished, save the results and post them in the thread using CODE tags (# button).









Depending on the results, we may or may not want to run these repairs.

Stop here and report the results. I will make another post with repair steps to run, but don't run them until we've determined if this scan shows repairs needed, and what they are, and decide if we should do them or not.

Back in Safe Mode

Go to the Repair Tab and click Open Repairs.

02-Reset File Permissions (should show C drive only)
03-Reset Service Permissions

05-Repair WMI
06-Repair Windows Firewall
07-Repair Internet Explorer
10-Remove Policies Set by Infections
15-Repair Proxy Settings
17-Repair Windows Updates
21-Repair MSI (Windows Installer)
26-Restore Important Windows Services

• Perform the repairs.
• Save the log and post it here.
• Reboot the system into normal mode.
• Give it about 5 minutes or so, then reboot into safe mode and run the same repairs again.
• Save the log and post it again.
• Reboot into normal mode.
• Run Windows Update and report the results.

 

I'm gonna be AFK for a few hours, so no rush, but if you post the scan results I'll try to look at them.

I was reading your first message about making sure I had my data backed up. And that got me to thinking I should probably do at least 1 more check on my system and ensure there was nothing lingering or NEW. My son had downloaded a bunch of new stuff (N64 Iso's and an emulator), and i was uncertain to say the least if my system would still be clean. It wasn't. I'm running all the scans now. I'll post the messages but hopefully it doesn't throw a monkey wrench into the plans.

 

Good move. It's difficult to try and fix an OS with an active infection. *Wink

CHROME.EXE unsigned could be indication of a Poweliks infection.

Post the 2 logs it puts in the same directory as where it is run from. (I think they are frst.txt and addition.txt.)

Oh yeah, 1 more thing. I never noticed this one before but last night when I was running Malwarebytes-Anti Mal, Windows defender came up with this. Seems it's been coming back for awhile. Could this be root of the problem?




I'll do those other checks right now.

It says that I don't ESET Poweliks in my system.
