Please do not take this too personally but I can't understand how a simple process to create a Microsoft account to sign in to MSN website ended up with you switching your Windows sign-in user account from local to Microsoft account?

That being said, if you want your original local Windows user account back, see this tutorial: Local Account - Switch to in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Rest of the post is for possible future readers, to avoid same mistake.

If you just need a Microsoft account to sign in Microsoft services but want to continue signing in to Windows with a local account, or if you want an Outlook.com email address, go to https://login.live.com. In OP's case that was one click away, clicking Sign in on MSN page takes you there:

When at sign in / sign up page, click link Create one:

Fill in your details and create an account:

That's it. You now have a Microsoft account, an Outlook.com email address which you can use to sign in to all Microsoft services, but you are still signing in to Windows with your local account.

Kari, many thanks for your help, it is appreciated. Creating an account on the MSN page as set out in your helpful tutorial is exactly what I did. The problem is that I am the sole user of this desktop computer and previously I did not have to sign in at all because I had not set up a local account. Having created the Microsoft account (that has resolved the location problem) I found that I had to sign into my start screen using my Microsoft Account password so I went straight from no sign in at all to using the MS password.

I will have a look at switching to the local account to sign in but perhaps as I am in a hole it would be better to stop digging! This Win 10 is all very new to me so thanks for your help but if things (like location) don't seem to work I would like to know why.

The most important thing is that you get it to work as you want to, set Windows and its applications (like Edge and its MSN page) up to serve your needs.

As long as you are happy with it, everything is OK *Smile

Kari, I have now set up the Local Account log in. However I have now lost my default location in Edge and MNS. I have to sign in to my MS account in MNS to correct the default but even if I check the "Keep me signed in" box if I close Edge and re-open then I have to sign in again. Is there any way I can remain signed in so I do not have to keep signing in every time I open Edge? If not I would be better off signing in at the start with my Microsoft password.

Something else is wrong now, MSN as all Microsoft sites should remember you once you have signed in if so selected.

Try this: using Edge, go to https://login.live.com and sign in, selecting Keep me signed in:

Now open the MSN page, if not automatically signed in click Sign in and again select to keep you signed in and it should pick your Microsoft account credentials. When done, close and reopen Edge. Tell us what happens, were you automatically signed in or not?

I have done that exactly as instructed. When I close Edge and re-open I have to sign in again on the MSN site.

If I click on the login.live.com link the site opens in Internet Explorer and shows me logged into my account. If I copy the link into Edge and open I am asked to sign in. If I sign in and save, when I close and re-open Edge I have to sign in again.

@Judesman, I can set the location for Weather in Edge and it stays as I set it (as you would expect it to). I also remain signed in to websites. As you don't stay signed in, I suspect your inability to do either of the above has nothing to do with whether you have an MSN a/c or not (I don't). Rather, I suspect you may have turned on this setting...

Edit: I have just tested this on another of my local accounts - it's clearing 'Cookies and saved website data' that removes the saved Weather location.

Bree, thanks so much, that's it!

The question is now, is there any way to accessing my computer without logging on?
