Change DPI Scaling Level for Displays in Windows 10

Hello skh, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

All three options are just different ways to set the same thing. I like to include different ways in case one option may not be available for someone for whatever reason. OPTION ONE would be the easiest one to use though.

Usually it's best to use the recommended screen resolution for your display.

It won't hurt to see if adjusting your DPI scaling may help any. The higher the DPI the larger everything will appear.

Brink. Thank you for the prompt reply. I would like things to appear smaller and be able to see the task bar of course. Will try adjusting the DPI settings and see what happens. .

I switched to the recommended 2048x1152 display setting (which hides the task bar) increased the DPI setting to 125%, and restarted my computer. the icons were larger but I still couldn't see the task bar. I then changed back to the 1680x1050 display setting, set DPI back to 100%, and restarted my computer. the display did not change. ie icons are the same and the task bar is still hidden below the bottom of the screen. Any suggestions? Thanks. .

I checked and the task bar is not on auto hide. I'm curious why the display did not change after I reset it back to the original settings, 1680x1050 at 100% DPI.

Does your settings for this currently show what you set them for?

Brick. Sorry to keep bugging you about this. I re-set it again to 1680x1050 at 100% DPI and I have the task bar back. I can live with it this way for now. I do notice that most of the discussions on this issue involve making the display larger than 100%. In my case, I would like it smaller without losing the task bar. Thanks again. .

Do you have the latest graphics driver installed?

If not, this could be a reason why the default (recommended) screen resolution is not displaying properly for you.

Displaying my ignorance here, I'm not sure what a graphic driver is or how to update it. My computer is brand new. The monitor is 2 years old.

In that case, please go ahead and create a new thread for this issue for us to continue there so we don't go off topic anymore from this tutorial. *Smile

    Hello ,
    new here (not to computing)
    .
    I did Option Three :
    and set it to my monitor's DPI of 94 ;
    logoutlogin .
However , I double checked the inch ruler via
Cntrl Pnl > Display > Advanced sizing of text and other items
_ set a custom scaling level (not recommended)
    ..
    -- Before and after and do not see any difference ;
it still reads long . --
Even did regedit 'As Administrator' _ no change_
I remember that in W7 it would change , and get almost exact .
    ...
Is there a work around ?
    ...
    thanks in advance

Just to verify, did you sign out and in or restart the computer afterwards to apply?

Looks like a change was made. I have updated OPTION THREE to add steps 6 and 7 that will allow it to work again. *Smile

    .
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
    Win8DpiScaling REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
    .
However , the 'double check' of the inch ruler mentioned above still shows no change .
    ..
    ? ideas ?
There are a couple of other registry entries in this general area that might need to be set .
    ..
    present setting :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
    DpiScalingVer REG_DWORD 0x00001000 (4096)

Change DPI Scaling Level for Displays in Windows 10 [IMG]

    or
    present setting
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
    AppliedDPI REG_DWORD 0x00000060 (96)

Change DPI Scaling Level for Displays in Windows 10 [IMG]

    finally , maybe
    present setting (not set)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PerMonitorSettings\<ID>
    DpiValue 0x00000000 (0)

Change DPI Scaling Level for Displays in Windows 10 [IMG]

    ...
This technet info may imply that trying to set Windows 10 to my monitor's
physical DPI of 94 is not do-able : 'DPI-related APIs and registry settings Updated: October 20, 2013 Applies To: Windows 8.1' https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn528846.aspx#system
    ...
    ? "Limited to range 100% -"
which begins at physical DPI of 96 (according to the chart) .
    ?
FYI : regedit verification of 'AppliedDpiScaling' keeps 're-setting' to (96) [binary] .
    ?
So , does this mean that we cannot set our Windows 10 'below' 96 DPI ?
If so , maybe some more involved with M$ could raise this issue .
    ...
    Again , thanks in advance
