How to Change Taskbar Thumbnail Live Preview Hover Delay Time in Windows 10


When you hover over the taskbar icon of an opened item (ex: Google Chrome), it will show you a thumbnail preview of its opened windows or tabs.

If you hover over the thumbnail preview of this item, it will instantly show you a live preview (peek) of only that item on your desktop. If you like, you can change the thumbnail live preview hover delay time to how many milliseconds you want instead of showing the live preview instantly. If you set a high delay time (ex: 1000000 milliseconds), it will effectively disable taskbar thumbnail live previews without having to turn off Peek at desktop.

This tutorial will show you how to change the taskbar thumbnail live preview hover delay time for your account in Windows 10.

You will need to have Peek turned on to have taskbar thumbnail live previews available.

Here's How:

1 Press the Win+R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit into Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

2 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of the Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)
*Arrow HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced




3 In the right pane of the Advanced key, double click/tap on the ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime DWORD to modify it. (see screenshot above)

If you don't have a ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime DWORD, then right click or press and hold on an empty area in the right pane of the Advanced key, click/tap on New, click/tap on DWORD (32-bit) Value, type ThumbnailLivePreviewHoverTime, and press Enter.


4 Select (dot) Decimal, type in how many milliseconds (1000 milliseconds = 1 second) you want for the hover delay time, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

The default time is 0 milliseconds.

If you set a high delay time (ex: 1000000 milliseconds), it will effectively disable taskbar thumbnail live previews without having to turn off Peek at desktop.





5 Close Registry Editor.

6 sign in to apply.

This setting affects the delay time to show both thumbnails and list.

How to OPEN Programs in Taskbar Preview WITHOUT Clicking ??

@Triliuner I'm sorry to hear it's not as simple as that.

When you have multiple windows opened from a single application e.g. 2 separate windows from Chrome, do they show up as previews when you hover over Chrome's icon in the taskbar, or as a list? Just asking to clarify that, they are at least showing as previews. If not, this should help: Change Taskbar Thumbnail Threshold to Show List in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials

As for the different windows not showing when you hover your mouse over a preview, maybe it has something to do with the delay, see here: Change Delay Time to Show Taskbar Thumbnails in Windows 10 Windows 10 Tutorials (restoring the default value)

I hope that helps, if not, maybe others can suggest some other things to try..

 

Windows 10 taskbar thumbnail live preview

How do I get my full screen preview when I hover over a taskbar thumbnail. It was working yesterday and I know of no reason why it stopped. I have the live thumbnail, but want the full screen preview of the thumbnail without having to click on the thumbnail.

I recently restored my desktop. After the restore, my taskbar thumbnail preview stopped showing a """live"""" picture(video) of what an application was doing, instead, it shows a still photo. I did notice that if the application wasn't minimized and I hovered
over the thumbnail of that application, the thumbnail preview was showing the "live" picture and not a still photo. For example, if a video was playing on a browser then when the browser was not minimized and my mouse was on the thumbnail preview. In the preview,
the video would also be playing but if the application was minimized then the preview would be a still photo
