  2. I went to BIOS by the tutorial (and restored fast boot again, because it took 5+ min. to boot) and it uses AHCI mode (it does support UEFI because it says that it supports and I've used it with windows 7 and Linux, but it doesn't matter). What should I do now? It is unlikely that it fixed itself and there is still a bit of lag on application-software start up.

  3. Run diagnostics on the hard drive I guess? Did you install in UEFI mode? If you did there should be an EFI partition listed in Disk management.

No, uefi was off and is now. Which diagnostics software do you advise me?

  5. Check device manager to see what make and model hard drive you have. Then go to the manufacturers web and look for a diagnostic utility.

  6. This is very odd once more. Device manager shows me only the number ST9250315AS. Nothing more. I googled but it shows me only specifications.

P.S. It seams that publisher and maintainer is Seagate and it advises software named "SeaTools for Windows". I will try it and get back to you. *Smile Thank you so much so far *Smile

I've already ran the tool (Fix all fast and Fix all long have failed), so it seams that hdd is responsible. Is that fixable (I mean is there any option beside buying new hdd or ssd)? Thank you for your time.

  9. No, you need to replace it. What did it report? Bad sectors? It's been my experience that once the drive starts showing bad sectors it just goes down hill from there. Those mechanical drives wear out. If you can afford it get an SSD. Solid State drives are much much faster that a spinner drive. Especially a 5400 RPM laptop drive. They generate less heat save power. They also take bumps and jolts without missing a beat. No moving parts.

  10. Yes, bad sectors (Linux warned me about 51 of them, but.. I mean 51 didn't seem a lot of because that number did not alter for 6+ months). So, ok.. could you just inform me about average SSD price (SSD that is, sort of, worth of mentioning) and give a peace of advice about it. Thank you so much!

    Hi

Wanted to mention that you can also have the sectors marked as bad so that Windows will not write to them. You do that by doing a full format of your hdd instead of a quick format. That should speed things up if you wanted to do a fresh install

However (why is there always a but involved), that would only be a sticking plaster solution. A temporary fix. A holding pattern. The hard drive may deteriorate further and ultimately fail. It is something for you to consider, although it also something I would recommend against doing.

  12. I don't like flasters in these cases. I will use pc only when I have to until I get new ssd. Thank you

Seagate drives used to be among the very best consumer drives available, then they took a nosedive. I had two spinners fail me in the span of 6 months and both were Seagates. Once you start failing the Seagate SW tests, you need to replace the drive ASAP! Yeah, it could last several more months -- or, it could fail completely the next day -- as mine did!

Here's a link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...tem=20-147-372 It's a Samsung 250G for $99, not suggesting you buy this one, just giving an example of what's available and a price. I've got two Samsung EVO 120G SSD and am happy with them.

  15. Damn you Canadian dollar. $36 more for the exact same drive. SMH, and 15% TAX.
