Creator Update - can it be rejected?

I'm like JW05, I've been getting a popup window on my computer telling me to change my privacy settings in preparation for the Creator's update, and the the only option not to do it was to click on Remind Me Later.

Well, on yesterday's popup, the big window that won't let me continue what I was going to do on my computer didn't have that option. It said this was the last time they were going to delay this action, and that was highlighted. When I clicked on it, the window disappeared. Now I'm not sure what to expect.

I automatically get important security updates loaded onto my computer, but I was under the impression that the Creator's update wasn't mandatory for security, and would just have a bunch of extra features to do things I have no interest in doing. My computer use is very basic, I'm a senior and don't want to complicate things if I don't have to, I have nobody to assist me if something goes wrong with my computer. Windows 10 already has too much unused junk on it and I'm sorry that my latest computer had to have it on there already.

What kind of privacy settings do you have to change? Is the Creator update mandatory for overall computer security? Can I expect to be asked other privacy questions before this update is installed? Do you think I'll get another popup telling me to change my privacy settings?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm not lazy but lack computer knowledge and don't want to make any changes I'll regret. Thanks for any advice. I'm in the United States, when is this Creator's update supposed to be ready for automatic download, I have no desire to figure out how to do it manually by myself.

    Thanks for any advice.

  2. Privacy is a big deal these days and Windows appears to be following suit of other vendors in forcing you to review your settings.

Click on Start, Settings, Privacy. The main headings to look under are General, Location, Camera and Mic. The questions and settings are straight forward. You can check the other headings as well.

If you shut something off and you need Windows or the app will tell you and ask you to reconsider.
@Berton, my Apple products ask. If you go to system preferences, App Store you can influence delivery.

It will become mandatory sooner or later (assuming Microsoft continue with current patterns) because earlier versions will stop getting security updates. That point is probably at least a year away though.

  4. Creator Update - can it be rejected?

I failed to answer Bigfoot's question on when will Creator update be available for automatic download. The answer, now.

That said, it is being doled out by Microsoft based on their expected success rate with your machine. The roll out started April 11, 2017. This was new machines, new tech with a high expectation for success. Issues noted, servers reloaded and the next group was updated. Rinse and repeat.

I've noticed in the last two weeks a number of older machines that I service have been updated. This could also be because they have been closing the privacy message thereby delaying it.

As you got the message the update should be soon. Now it is big update so the download first has to occur.

If it doesn't happen, say in the next two weeks, post and people will help you "Force" it. This likely won't be necessary.

None, really. It's just that Microsoft got a lot of criticism when Windows 10 came out about being too quiet about what information they can collect. This review is as much to tell you exactly what each privacy setting does, as it is to get you to set or change them. It's Microsoft's attempt to be more open about their telemetry.

As already stated, just choose to Defer Feature updates if you are running Pro.

I`m also staying with the AU for as long as possible, I didn`t like the CU either. *Sad

Creator Update - can it be rejected?

Hello again. I got my last invitation to review settings and then could not use computer until I did something. So reviewed settings and I turned them all off, then ran WUSHOWHIDE. This showed the Creator update was lurking. I now have this update 'Hidden' when I look at 'Show Hidden Updates'.

    Questions if I may:
    i) will this remain hidden and not install as long as I leave it in Show Hidden Updates?
ii) will this prevent other security updates from downloading?
iii) when looking in 'Power' there is an Update and Shut Down option. So when the next updates come along, assuming ii) doesn't prevent this, will Creator get installed along with the later updates?

    Thank you.

Yes. However, when 1703 becomes Current Branch for Business it is re-released, effectively making it a new update that will need hiding again.

    No.

Do you see two options, 'Shut Down' and 'Update and Shut Down', or just the one 'Update and Shut Down'? If you see just one option, it means a cumulative update is waiting to be installed. If you see the two shut down options, this means the Creators Update has already downloaded and is ready to be installed. You are not given a choice if it's only a cumulative update, but you are for a Features Update like the Creators Update because it can take some time to install.

Yes, so I haven't hidden it *Sad. Basically it's there waiting to be installed, so when the next updates come along it will get installed then - yes?

It's going to install the next time you shut down and restart the PC, whether or not you wait for another update. In fact, I don't think windows update checks for any more updates until you have dealt with this one. Depending on the specs of your PC, it should take about 40 to 50 minutes to install.

As you started this thread with "...I should say I am a computer lay person..." and went on to say "...thanks one and all for the input, but I really don't understand what you are talking about..." it's probably not a good idea for us to try and talk you through removing this update - there's too much room for error.

The safest course of action now is to let it install the Creators Update. You may well find that it's not that much different from what you're used to. If so, relax and leave it alone. If you do find you'd like to go back to your old system, then for the next 10 days you have the option to return to your previous build. After that the windows.old folder will automatically be deleted and you'll have to stay on 1703.

When you say you don't need anything that the CU offers, I think you're being short sighted. There's a lot in the CU that isn't broadly advertised in those "What's new in CU" articles. A lot of under the hood things that make your computer stay protected from Ransomware attacks and other kinds of malware, for instance.

I still find new stuff in the CU that I hadn't noticed before, and I've been using it a long time.

Discovered something interesting, well to me at least. Bree, when I said there were the 2 options, I assumed it was because PC was waitingto install Creator 1703. Actually it turned out to be Framework 4.7 W10 Version1607 KB3186568 in waiting and 1703 is still in Hidden Updates when looking withWUSHOWHIDE.
At least I haven’t been rushed into 1703 and I can installlater if/when I choose to, using WUSHOWHIDE – correct?
    Thanks for your time everybody.

Correct. If you unhide 1703 windows update will download and install it. Because you have been offered it already you know that your PC has passed Microsoft's compatibility tests so it should install without problems.

If you do decide to try 1703, rather than relying on windows update, I would recommend using the Media Creation Tool to download the install media either as a .ISO or as a USB. A manual upgrade tends to be more reliable than using windows update, with the advantages that you get to choose the time of the upgrade, plus you get to keep the install media for later use.

Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

In File Explorer, either mount the .ISO or plug in the USB then run the Setup.exe you'll find on it to begin the upgrade.
