    Creators Update Failure

Having been notified of the 1703 update, I set it running, eventually getting the message:

"We can't install some updates because other updates are in progress."

I hit the retry button with the same result.

I restarted the laptop and tried again, with the same result.

I ran the Troubleshooter Updates Fixer and received the following messages:

Possible fix: delete and re-download updates. (I skipped this option.)
Potential Windows Update Database error detected. Fixed.
Some security settings are missing or have been changed. Fixed.
Service registration is missing or corrupt. Fixed.
Windows Update components must be repaired. Fixed.

I tried to update again with the same result and the same error messages on the Update Fixer, so I allowed the Update Fixer to delete and re-download updates, eventually getting the message:

"We can't install some updates because other updates are in progress."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    :)

  2. windows 10 hp pc stuck in update in progress?

    Hello John,

Checking for Windows Update can be done easily by looking into the update status of the System. To ensure that you have the latest Windows 10 version 1607 update, we recommend that you check for new updates by going to
    Settings> Update & security> Windows Update>
    Check for updates.

It was mentioned in your post that you failed to install Windows 10 version 1703 or Creators Update. Several factors might have caused the failure in installing the Creators Update, viz., failure to meet the system requirements for the update, or a system
configuration. To help you resolve successfully install the Creators Update, kindly provide us with more information by answering the questions below.

    • Do you get an error code, or an error message when you install the Creators Update?
    • Were there changes made prior to the attempted installation of the Creators Update?
    • Was the update installation problem only happened with the installation of the Creators Update only?

We look forward to your immediate response.

  4. Creators Update Failure

Hi Andy Kay. Welcome to the TenForums @Andy Kay

Since you tried the installed trouble shooter I would try this one.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...troubleshooter

Then I would try sfc /scannow.

Failing success on these fronts I would do an in place repair / upgrade.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

As with all significant OS updates I would ensure I have my data backed up off machine and I would create an Image with a tool like Macrium Reflect. Better safe than sorry.

    Thanks Ken.
The new Troubleshooter made no difference.
SFC /scannow gave the message "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations".
I backed up all my data on a removable hard drive.
I downloaded and installed Macrium Reflect. Having gone through the installation, the program invitesme to "choose your optical/USB device and click Finish", but the USB option is greyed out. My laptop has no optical drive.
Should I go ahead and do the in-place repair/upgrade anyway?

    Ken, something strange here.
Firstly, my system was fine before it started to install 1703 on 15th May.
I have made numerous attempts to install 1703 with the same result -- another update is in progress.
In the middle of these attempts, KB150513 (for 1607) installed successfully.
Today, on powering up my system, it has reverted to the message "Your device is up to date. [...] Good news! The Windows 10 Creators update is on its way."

[Edit: Did SFC fix something and not tell me?]

Maybe I should just wait for the process to begin again?

    Creators Update Failure

If you have not already performed a reset or in place upgrade:

Type winver in the left lower corner search. What is your windows 10 operating system version and build?

If you are using version 1607 open administrative command prompt and run: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

You have multiple options. It is always best to be backed up by creating an image or saving files, recording applications, and saving browser bookmarks.

Copy and paste this into notepad and save as a txt file. Then rename changing .txt to .bat Then copy and paste into administrative command prompt.

    Net stop bits
    Net stop wuauserv
    Net stop appidsvc
    Net stop cryptsvc
    Del %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat /Q
    Del "%HOMEDRIVE%\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat" /Q
    Del %WINDIR%\SoftwareDistribution\*.* /s /Q
    Net start bits
    Net start wuauserv
    Net start appidsvc
    Net start cryptsvc

If this fixes your windows update problem then great. If it does not fix the windows update or windows upgrade problem then you have multiple options:

    1) attempt windows update/upgrade from clean boot
    2) reset save files
    3) reset remove files
    4) in place upgrade
    5) clean install
    6) troubleshoot viewing multiple logs

They each may have different time requirements and similar but different results.

If you are using version 1607 the resets will keep you at 1607 and then you will need to upgrade.

The in place upgrade seems to get you to a working version 1703 without having to restore files, applications or bookmarks.
The clean install is best if you think you may have malware or ransomware or any other unusual operating system/registry problem.

Create a bootable windows 10 iso. This will enable you to perform an in place upgrade, a clean install, and have a recovery bootable USB flash drive for any future operating system or registry problems:

    Download Windows 10

Thanks guys. Since something strange has happened and reset my laptop to a pre-1703 installation state (with Update working now), I'll wait for the 1703 update and return to this thread if the problems persist.
