Windows 10: Cumulative Update KB4054517 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.125

I am now officially confused; in the past, I was simply confused....

1. I tried three times to do a Clean Boot; each time, the Microsoft Services which I had hidden and disabled were reset during the restart to get to Clean Boot, so it did not work.

2. I used the MS Support system to get a very patient, and clearly knowledgeable technician. She deleted lots of files, for example, then I unblocked KB4054517, and she ran an update search. When that KB appeared, she rebooted my computer through her remote support connection.

Due to all the gyrations going on, I am not clear as to exactly when, in terms of during which reboot, this strange event took place. At any rate, during one reboot, after a rather lengthy period of nothing but a blank screen, the usual `working on update' screen appeared, except that it stated that it was at step 2 of 2, although I had never seen step oneWhen the progress reached 30%, the computer rebooted, and after a while, resumed updating. When it reached 100% it appeared to stop.

We waited for a long interval, and she had me turn off the computer and restart it. It was not entirely happy with that, but did eventually restart. Returning to Windows Update, KB4058043 showed up again, and required a reboot--or at least I think that it did, and KB405417 said that it did. Rebooted, 43 was installed, 17 not.

She started a new download of the ISO process, and we ended the call after a while, as I had both a case number and a direct phone number. I happened to look at the monitor as the verification process was starting, but the next time, there was only a small pop-up which said that it could not start something , and to reboot and resume. I restarted,, could not find anything to resume.

As I still had the desktop shortcut to the ISO-creating program, I clicked on, which stated that I had the latest version of Windows 10, which, as KB4054517 had apparently not been installed, just added to my lack of understanding of what was going on.

I tried to run dism.exe, which failed, so I logged on here to report my latest shenanigans, where I found your comment about OS Build 16299.125. I had seen that just before logging on, and was quite certain that it was not a number I had seen before. Apparently, I have an up-to-date version of Windows, but which continues to be corrupt, and which insists that KB 4054517 has not been installed, and which leaves me wondering about future update success.

Since these updates are cumulative you don't need 043 to be installed.
If it were me I'd run sfc /scannow instead of dism first.

You won't see it (KB4054517) either as explained in my previous paragraph. The important thing here is that if the last update (KB4058043) has been successfully installed, that has also, by so doing, taken care of KB4054517. That also means that you should be at OS build version 16299.125 which is the current version you should be at.

Now, my guess is that your user account is corrupt. That is probably why you still cannot run dism.exe command lines. I have already suggested in one of my previous posts to try to create a new user account as Administrator and run those commands to see what gives. If things work in that new account, it would be a good idea to keep it and transfer all your data to it. If not, you can always delete it.

 

After my last post, I removed several entries in the Software Distribution/Downloads folder before updating after an update to Snagit. After reading your explanation, I took yet another look at Update History (much of which has been obliterated), where 17 had been showing as waiting to be installed. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it now shows as having been successfully installed today, so that is now settled.

I had completely, totally, even utterly forgotten that suggestion, which I shall follow.

Well, one out of four PCs fails and it seems like it will just not install. Will look into it.

 

I've been following this post since it was started. I'm not very computer literate, and somethings were mentioned that I would be scared to do, because my knowledge is limited. I noticed in Post 93 above about KB4058043. This update installed on my computer with no problem, but I'm still showing that KB4054517 still will not download to my computer, and even though KB4058043 installed, mine is still showing my Version 1709 and Build 16299.98.

 

Can you post a screenshot of your Windows Update history (as in post #91) to show that KB 4058043 has been successfully installed. If that's the case, you should be at OS Build version: 16299.125 otherwise something is totally weird, at odd here.

 

At the risk of sounding boastful, I quite understand the principle and value of volunteering, which is certainly what you have been doing for me. I started when I was in seventh grade: My mother volunteered to work at a used book sale (which has become the largest such venture in the U.S.) As I was in seventh grade, I got out of school earlier than I would when I entered ninth grade, which is when athletics took place after the end of the classroom day, whereas in grades 7 and 8, the took place before the last class of the day. Mom would pick me up, take me to the book sale, where I moved cartons of books out of storage as the stock at various sales tables ran low

I continued volunteering in several fields, with my last major efforts being to start two volunteer fire departments, the first of which I was privileged to serve as the first volunteer fire chief, and then as the first career chief. I later started a second volunteer department, and served as the first volunteer fire chief in a department which continues to be staffed by all volunteers.

So, I am now going to volunteer you! I have only once ever needed to create a new user profile, and recall that it was not precisely what might be defined as a pleasant way to spend the day. I have done so, up to a point, starting it and letting Windows do the various things it does to set up a new profile.

Where you come in, as I don't have any clear recollection of how to this, and as I have found various and even conflicting advice, is how to transfer, for example, User/appdata that does not get transferred from an existing profile to a new one. I did not even find anything useful in a quick search of this site; is there such, or can you suggest something to assist me?

 

No, you are not being boastful, it is always good to do some good deeds in life. It always pays back one way or another. Believe me on that one!. Hence, my quote of the day: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

With that said, before pushing the envelope and going to the data transfer part, can you check first to see if your dism.exe command lines work fine and successfully in the new user account as Administrator. If not, there is no need to implement the data transfer as it would be a waste of time.

 

For some reason I can't post the image you ask for. I click on the Insert image Icon "from computer" nothing happens for me to insert that image. I've clicked on it several times. When I click OK to locate the image on my computer nothing happens. It's not letting me locate the image to insert. I checked to make sure I was signed in and I am. Finally was able to insert my images.

I'm back to edit this post just to say that KB4054517 just tried to install again on my computer and it failed again.

 

Can you click on "Uninstall Updates" according to your second screenshot. That should open the control Panel where you will see all your updates. See if you can spot the failed update (KB4054517). Right-click on it and choose "Uninstall". After that, (whether or not you spot it), I would suggest you run the Windows Updates troubleshooter and also I would try to Reset Windows Updates in win 10. After that, normally you should check for updates again and see if KB4054517 could be installed successfully this time around.
