Windows 10: Defragmentation of SSD's

hey guys,

since Build 14295 my SSD's defrag starts automatically .

The new Build , right now 14328 changes the settings and i have to reset this manually, to prevent this to happen.

Am I the only one here?

If the result of the command:

fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

=0 it indicates that Trim is enabled therefore the O/S has recognised the disk type as SSD.

Although generally accepted that SSD do not require Defragmentation there are housekeeping tasks to be performed. If you follow the old route to defragmenter the dialogue opened now is described as Optimiser. This new version handles SSD correctly and should
be on. The renamed Defragmentation dialogue box shows Solid State Disk in the second column

SSD rarely come with toolbox software but can normally be downloaded from the Manufacturer site.

I have run the command, and it came back with the result of 0. I had not heard of Trim before, but I have since read up about it, and it all makes sense.

Windows 10 would TRIM a SSD by default instead of defrag.

But my pc says otherwise. After each Build every drive is set to be defragged...

I will with the next Build take a prtscrn to show.

So it is not totally clear for me.

In that case, use the tutorial below to make sure TRIM is enabled for SSDs to see if that may help.

Insiders builds always resets some options like that so you have to set them up as you want every time.
Are you sure it's defragmenting or it says "Optimizing" ? Is SATA port set to AHCI mode. Trim usually doesn't work in IDE (Legacy) mode.

Whatever the PC says - defrag is impossible on an SSD -- the physics are different. If you have any settings anywhere to allow defrag just switch them off.

On an HDD you get problems because of physical arm movement to retrieve bits of the file and that can cause extra reads which take longer because it takes a finite time to for the heads to come under the reading movement of the HDD (physical rotation).

An SSD has no moving parts and effectively it's one gigantic storage array so reading different "areas" of the SSD makes no difference. Like on a chess board it makes no difference if the SSD reads a1 or g7. Same time.

I doubt if on the latest SSD's it's even worth worrying about TRIM either. SSD's are so much faster than HDD's I really wouldn't bother.

IMO the best way to reset an SSD (if you really have to) is to back it up via an imaging program, re-format and then restore. This should re-order all the long file chains (if any) but IMO you wouldn't notice the difference anyway.

It only optimizes the SSD, whatever that means. I set it to once a month.

 

I'm with Jimbo on this one. Attempting to defrag an SSD actually harms it. Some software in a Windows OS permits it, but you still shouldn't do it.
