Windows 10: Desktop Icons Have Disappeared

Well, I did something, but cannot find out what it was I dis or how to rectify it. This AM when starting Windows 10 Home, I had no icons on the desktop. Using the file explorer>desktop, they are there, so i did not delete them. Somehow I have hidden them from view. The normal app that controls the default icons does not have a hide/unhide, so I am at a loss. Suggestions as to where to look would be appreciated.

What a crock of BS your update has crash multiple system I manage. For the money I pay your company yearly for software along the amount of cost your failed updates cost me is getting to the point were Apple is becoming attractive. Your latest Fkup is
probably the end of the line for me and my company. Hard to believe a company as loaded as Microsoft can be such a unreliable provider . You corrupted ours and our clients systems you should be held responsible for it.

 

For clarification, I would like to add that I did see the tutorial. In detail here is what I did:
click the Window10 icon lower left orner. Selected desktop. On ths blank desktop (if that is where I am) per the tutorial, I right click on a blank area. NOTHING HAPPENS. I do not get any additional options. I am not at the desktop as I assume or there is something else I am missing.

Edit: The registry entry per the tutorial HideIcons Dword is set to 0 (show them).

Edit #2- disregard my postngs. I have concluded that something is overlaying on top of the desktop. I am just reinstalling the OS.

Came in today and my icons are missing also on Windows 10, and yes, it is marked to view, desktop icons.

 

This happens if you have an additional monitor attached. Unplug the additional monitor and flip to 'tablet mode', then back, and they all came back even after i replugged in my second monitor.

 

I had the same problem and spent many many hours trying to solve the issue without success. I finally had to reinstall windows 10. Mine had a slight twist where the start menu was on all the time even without me pressing the start button. By right clicking the start button, I clicked on desktop and got to desktop page but with no icons. Then when I press the start button, just before the menu comes up, I would see the icons for a split second. Also when I right click on desktop, nothing happened. Because of what couple others have said, I felt that there is a connection with the type of computer you have. I own a Dell 2 in 1 laptop where you can change from laptop mode to tablet mode. Sometimes depending on how I hold it watching a video in bed, it can go back and forth between tablet mode and laptop mode many times. I feel there may be a connection to that which caused the icons to disappear or as he said above, another screen overlaying the desktop. I hope this gives others some hints to fix this issue.

 

Update to my previous post,

While messing around settings, I duplicated my earlier predicament when I changed the tablet mode to make windows more touch friendly. I did this by going into settings, click system, click tablet mode, then turned on the button that said to make windows more touch friendly. So I went back and turned the button off and it seemed to fix the problem.

If I am correct, that button does not make windows more touch friendly. I hope this works for rest of you.

 

To the earlier poster who tried to open a "recent doc" in an application: The problem appears to be that Win10 has logged you on as a brand new user instead of as yourself. This means the file path to the doc will not exist under the new user profile, therefore you will get a message that the doc no longer exists. It does not mean that the doc no longer actually exists. In my case I found everything still existed under C:\Users\(MyNormalUserName)\Desktop\(FolderName)\(Filename.FileExtension). If you go to the file explorer and open the C Drive\Users in the menu on left hand side of window, you may find the missing docs and shortcuts. I was in for BIG luck as I was in a hurry and didn't have time to restore everything when this happened to me yesterday morning. Got up this morning logged on and whaddyaknow everything back to normal and I am signed on as me, with my usual desktop! Thank goodness I didn't do hours of unnecessary work reinstalling programmes and moving all my desktop folders and shortcuts - phew!

 

Are you using two screens? This morning after another Windows 10 update, my icons disappeared. I unplugged the second screen, and when I plugged it back in, there they were.

 

My desktop icons disappeared today on my Windows 10. To get them back, I did the following:
1. Right-click on an open area of the desktop
2. Click View
3. On mine, Show Desktop icons was already checked even though they were not appearing. Uncheck Show Desktop icons
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, and Check Show Desktop icons to put them back on.

In other words, if you toggle the desktop icons off and then on again, it worked for me.

 

Do you know how to fix this?

 

Hi Bandb1 have you located the desktop folders etc under your old user profile? Worst case scenario you can transfer all your old desktop stuff to your new profile. But I would suggest you try getting any available windows 10 updates first just in case you get lucky like I did.
