Unfortunately no guarantee is given, but a clean install should solve those problems.

However we need to take into account that
    • the hardware of your system is fine
    • the installation media is not corrupted
    • the hardware with which you're planning to clean install is fine (e.g., USB, CD)
If all those requirements are alright (what mostly is the case), you may expect that the issues should be resolved.

    Hi. Thanks for reply.

Could you suggest how to ensure:

    • the hardware of my system is fine
    • the installation media is not corrupted
    • the hardware with which I'm planning to clean install is fine (e.g., USB, CD)

I think I should probably start from scratch, to re-install Windows 10. I have only partial functionality in:

    • Control Panel (can't see dates for installed programs etc).
    • Control Panel (Troubleshooting Hardware and Devices - Device Diagnostic error code 0x80070057, Source: engine, Context: Elevated. Also had 0x80070490 error, Context restricted)
    • Settings (Windows update errors - I can see last update: KB3213986, on 20th Feb, but Checking for updates gave error: 0x800705b4
    • Command line (I have been able to run chkdsk but some other cmd's won't work).

I have a 16 GB USB, which was formatted (FAT32) and has Windows 10 ISO burned on (see Screenshot earlier in this thread), but would happily re-format and start again.

In regards to the everything but the HDD, you'll experience stability issues that won't go away when changing OS and/or reinstalling the OS.
For the HDD, it could take a longer amount of time before any stability issue occurs.
Download the attached zip file, extract it and import the file in eventviewer (search eventvwr.msc after pressing windows logo + r)
The file will create a custom event view that provides events related to the HDD (like paging errors, bad blocks that have been found and chkdsk logs)
    Attachment 122766

For the USB, a chkdsk with /r switch should be enough.
For the installation media, I would personally recommend to download a fresh ISO.

I cannot start eventvwr.msc since This app has been blocked for your protection..... mmc.exe.....
This message has appeared frequently.Chkdsk /r : type of file system is FAT 32
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use with another process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first.

Please choose 'save all events in custom view...' instead, that way we can have a closer look at the events.

EDIT: of course, upload the saved events *Smile

It looks like both hard drives are in a bad shape.
I notice a chkdsk log, chkdsk without any parameter in command prompt or via Windows Explorer unfortunately won't help much.

Going back to the requirements for a clean install, it may help fix problems but it will also result in new problems with the amount of errors. Recommendation, replace both hard drives and clean install on a new hard drive.

That sound drastic. PC was working well until I tried to install MySQL just over a week ago. But, you are the expert.
Do I have two hard drives on this laptop?

The logs report errors starting around november last year.

Mainly these 2 event errors are present, which is why I said 'both'.
Code: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1. The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR29.[/quote]

Okay, I was working on large files (Word, Excel) and laptop was labouring at times.
I appreciate your help. Any advice on where to get (and what) hard drives. My system specs show Hitachi HTS 5450....A300.

Since you're in a different country I cannot give proper advice where to get a hard drive.

If you can afford it, I would suggest to get a similar HDD which is 50% larger or if the laptop isn't too old get a SSD instead.
