    Explorer sort order puzzle

Hopefully my question is clear from the following illustration. In short, I cannot understand why my files and subfolders are not getting sorted into the logical order I expect. Pretty sure thet were correct under my previous XP PC. All folders should come first. And several files are not sorted. Yet the great majority are!

  2. - Retaining Sort Order in File Explorer:

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Let me assist you on your issue regarding Windows 10.

"it takes a LONG time for the software to rescan the folder and re-order", which software are you using to rescan and re-order the folder?

You may follow the below steps and check if it helps.

    1. Open the drop box folder in file explorer which needs to be sorted.

    2. Click on the view tab in the file ribbon.

    3. Now select the sort by option.

    4. Select the "date created" option and also select descending order.

    5. By select these two options the most recent(new) files will be displayed in the top separated by most recent(new) folders.

Note: The above steps are for drop box folder only, if you want to sort the other folder similarly please follow the above steps.

Hope the information helps. Do reply if you need further assistance.

    Thank you.

  3. - Retaining Sort Order in File Explorer:

    - Is there any way to set a folders sort order in explorer so that when I open the folder it displays in Chronological order with latest date at the top/first? Currently, when in select my Dropbox folder on
my PC it displays with the OLDEST files at the top. When I click the Column header to re-sort so the most recent files are at the top, it takes a LONG time for the software to rescan the folder and re-order. How can I make it chronology order the default?
When I exit the program and open it again it does not seem to retain the historical settings.

Following setting is already selected. View/Options/Change folder Options/“Restore Previous Folder Options at login”

How do you want them sorted/displayed?

    By name?
    By date modified?
    By file type?

Windows handles this by default to a certain extent and I don't think that behavior can be changed easily.

But if you click any of the headings (such as "Name" or "Date" or "Type") it ought to sort the folder contents by that variable.

    Also, see here:

    Hope this helps a bit,

    Alphabetically. By clicking Name, obviously.

From what is displayed, Microsoft makes a distinction between folders and shortcuts.

The circled leading numbers seemed logical enough.

Thanks, I missed those shortcuts. Didn't look beyond the identical icons. They're normally clearly distinguished, but apparently not inside the Dropbox folder.

    But 2007 before 2001? 2012 before 2001?

After help in one of the Win 10 newsgroups I eventually fixed it using Policy Editor to revert from the so-called 'Intuitive' to 'Classical' sort mode. I still don't see how that sequence above can in any way be considered 'intuitive', but I'm happy to now have them in proper order. *Smile
