Windows 10: External backup can't see Desktop

Discus and support External backup can't see Desktop in Windows 10 Backup and Restore to solve the problem; Attachment 76549I don't know what is going on. When I tried to change this image to full size, the properties box ( or whatever it's called) flashes... Discussion in 'Windows 10 Backup and Restore' started by Gomer, Apr 19, 2016.

No, it says "Invalid Attachment specified." Try the Go Advanced button and then add using the Manage Attachments button below the message box (the long way round).

Also, you asked if I had any other users. I don't, but I added one, and when I opened up the External Drive for that user, both the Cookies and Desktop folders were there. Still not in my user folder. So, it has to do with the House of Mirrors Win 10 has with all the various iterations of the same folders (Quick access, This PC, C:\, etc.)

    {This is why I'm frustrated with MS. The more complicated the interface, the more chances for things to go wrong, as in cars. Mind you, I like power windows and mirrors on vehicles, but when they go bad, it is both complicated and expensive to repair. Ditto Win10.}

So, where would I go to "reinstall" the Cookies and Desktop folders? Somehow I inadvertently or something deleted them.

    Again thanks for your time.

Has the system ever been recovered from an infection of any kind?
Did you possibly grab a folder and unintentionally drag it to another position at some point?
    Agreed!
I honestly don't think a "Cookies" folder should exist on W10, so I am not sure where it came from. This is why I wondered about any previous infections, or reparse points/junctions.
    Not a problem at all.

Have you had a chance to run RKILL and ADWCleaner as I requested in Post #12 yet?
I can't recommend a repair install yet, as I need more information from the scans.

    Thanks.

EDIT: "I honestly don't think a "Cookies" folder should exist on W10, so I am not sure where it came from" - I take that back - I just found one on my system and it belongs to MS Edge.

Here is the location of mine, and it only shows with "show hidden files" selected:
    C:\Users\authorized user\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\#!002\MicrosoftEdge\Cookies

    External backup can't see Desktop

See the picture below (I posted in post #4). Can you post the same? (from Quick Access)
Right-click on Desktop folder and select Properties, then Location tab, and let's see what shows there for you.

External backup can't see Desktop [IMG]

Then, try this location and post the Location properties as well. (from C drive) Have a look in the AppData location where I found a Cookies folder, and see if you find your desktop in there?

@Gomer The CheckDisk command should find and fix bad reparse points/junctions, so I'd like you to run that please.

Open an elevated command prompt [right-click the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)]

Type Code: chkdsk C: /r[/quote] Here's an example from our tutorial, (option #3) of what you'll see:

External backup can't see Desktop [IMG]

Answer Y for yes, to schedule CheckDisk at the next boot. Save all work and close all windows. Reboot the computer and let it run. It will take quite some time, so be patient. Hopefully, this will put the Desktop back where it's supposed to be.

Well, simrick, I should have asked you whether I should have run RKILL and ADWCleaner before chkdsk /r, but I didn't, I ran Chkdsk after booting up this morning. It took about 2.5 hours. A quick check of properties This PC > Desktop: Location: C:\Users\authorized user\Cookies\Desktop andno change in the listings in Ext. Backup. Should I proceed with the RKILL and ADWC? Also how long do these things take to run as I have work to do and maybe should do that before. TA

Hi. Sorry, I was a bit busy this morning.
RKILL should only take a few minutes to run; ADWCleaner about the same. Yes, the CHKDSK can take quite some time. *Sad

OK, I just ran the RKILL and ADWCleaner. Cleaner is still open waiting for me to tell it to uncheck elements I want to keep. I'll bow to your greater knowledge about what to keep or get rid of. Here are the two logs
    Rkill.txt
    AdwCleaner[S1].txt

    Thanks for those logs.
I don't know if you had a look at them or not; there are a bunch of reparse points/junctions which point to nothing, and some questionable items which we need to get rid of.

I will be gone for a couple of hours this evening, so I'd like to ask you to do these things for now, and we can continue later tonight or tomorrow - whichever is better for you:

Close ADWCleaner for now and do not "clean" yet. Do not reboot the system, as everything RKILL does is undone by a reboot. If you find you must reboot after uninstalling any of these, please run RKILL again before continuing.

    1. Download and run Malwarebytes Antimalware Free, do a custom scan, select drive C: and check the box to scan for rootkits. This will take some time, depending on how big your hard drive is, so be patient. Let it quarantine everything it finds. Please post the log for me.

    2. Please uninstall the following, if they appear in your Installed Apps list (Settings>System>Apps and features [sort by name]):
(These may or may not exist after running the scan above.)

    Driver Scanner
    Search or Search.Browser
    Slimware Utilities
    Softonic
    Yahoo Partner Toolbar
Freeze.com or anything like “Freeze” or “NetAssistant” or “w3i” or "My.Freeze"
    Uniblue
    SearchScopes
    Funmoods

    3. If AVG give you an option to uninstall their "Safe Search", you might want to uninstall that as well, as it is considered by many to be a type of spyware. Personally, I would completely remove AVG and just let the system use Windows Defender for now. If you do this, you'll want to check Windows Update to get the latest virus definitions for Defender, and then let it run one scan.

    4. Next, please reset every browser on the system, whether you use them or not.

    Edge
    Firefox/Internet Explorer
    Google Chrome

Note: Internet Explorer can be found by typing iexplore.exe in the search box.

This should remove any extensions you may have added to your browsers, so they'll need to be re-added, but be careful which ones you re-introduce. If you save passwords in the browser, these may be removed as well, so be sure you have them written down.

    5. Next, open an Administrative Command Prompt (by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Command Prompt (Admin)):
Type sfc /scannow and press enter. This scan will take some time. When it finishes, we're looking for the result: "no integrity violations found". If it says it found errors and repaired them, or was unable to repair, please reboot the system and run it again (you may need to run this as much as three times).

After these are completed, I'd like you to run ADWCleaner again, and post the log.

    Thanks!

Right have done this and NOT rebooted

Have done this and will attach log (Couldn't find the txt version until later and now can't find a way to delete the docx file. They are the same.)

None of these above show up anywhere in the Apps

NOT sure if I have Safe Search active. I can't seem to activate Windows Defender. When I open Update and Security, and highlight Windows Defender, all the On buttons are greyed out. Below is Open Windows Defender which causes a popup "This app has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer. Must I completely remove AVG before Defender will open?

In any case, I turned AVG back on and am going to bed. I'm in Maine and it's 11pm. Bedtime.

    Good morning!

Good job with the Malwarebytes scan - it seems to have gotten most everything out and no viruses were found. Just FYI: If you go to Edit Post, and scroll down, you will see Manage Attachments. There you can delete the *.doc file.

Good. I didn't think so, but wanted to be sure. Thanks.

Windows Defender will remain inactive (turned off) as long as you have another 3rd-party AV on the system. You should only have one active AV running at any given time, as multiple active AVs will tend to cancel each other out, and leave the system vulnerable.

I would like to see AVG completely removed from the system for now. You can always put it back on when we are finished. If you have difficulty removing it, please let me know and I will provide a link for their removal utility.

I think we're on Step #4 now: resetting all browsers on the system, right? I'll wait to hear from you.

I'm in the same time time zone. *Smile

Right. For Edge "Do you want to change the execution policy?" You said "Reset" My choices are: "Yes"? "Yes to All"? "No"? "Suspend"? Sorry to be obtuse but I don't have a clue what exec. policy means.
