  1. External Hard Drive Issue.

    Hi,
I have version 10130 which I installed as an ISO file via my dvd drive, this was after Windows update failed on several occassions to upgrade it from 10074.
The problem that I have is that my Seagate 750gb External Hard Drive is not accessible to use for backups etc,the only
place I can find it is in Device Manager which shows that driver is installed and the drive is working normally,it is shown as drive G,however when I do a drive search for backups I get the "no drives found" error.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have tried the drive on a second machine running 7 pro and it is found immediately and installed with no issues.

    :)

  2. External hard drive issues

So I have a Toshiba 2TB external hard drive for work. I am backing up all of my data (using my HP/Windows 10) on this and it has been fine. My boss took the external HD and plugged it into her Mac and it was read-only, but she clicked on pop ups without
me being able to see what she altered. Now when I attempt to plug it into Windows, the drive spins and the lights blink, but it isn't recognized by Disk Management nor is it listed under My Computer. However, when I plug it into Macs it is again only recognized
in a read-only format. I assume that it must have been automatically reformatted in some way that has rendered it un-readable by Windows. When plugged into Macs in Disk Utility it is listed now as 2 partitions (I never partitioned it, so I think this might
be the problem). One is formatted as MS-DOS the other is NTFS. Not sure how to fix it so it is again readable in Windows, or at the very least editable on a Mac.

I tried updating all drivers, reinstalling the software that comes with the HD and neither has helped.

    Thanks!

    Emily

    external hard drive issue

Has anyone experienced a problem with their external hard drive that makes it look like there are 0 bytes used and the drive is not readable? I almost feel like I have a Trojan horse on my computer that has caused this a couple of times a year. I have
to use a recovery program to retrieve the data and it makes me think that maybe a manufacturer of a recovery software has somehow done this to make me buy their product. I'm willing to pay the money simply so I can get my data back. Am I just being paranoid?

    External Hard Drive Issue.

I have had a similar problem, which I believe, in my case, is associated with the USB. (presumably yours is USB?). I solved the problem by pulling out the usb connection whilst the OS was running, and reinserting it. Occasionally it still loses site of the ext, but it is not too troublesome.

  5. please post a screen shot of Disk Management.
See: How to Post a Screenshot of Disk Management

There's very little information to go on and there are many possible resolutions.

One is that drive letters are not assigned, although you said Dev mgr see G: - the disk management will help there.
If that's the case, assign drive letters while in Disk Mgmnt

Another is that the USB ports are 3.0 and the driver is not installed - not sure if Dev mgr would see G: though.
    Try another USB port.

It would be very helpful to have more information about your machine and ext drive:

Please update the Systems Specs in your forum profile with complete information.

    • In the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field. The specific model number is important - there are often many models of a given series.
For example, my machine is a HP Pavilion dv6, but there are tens of the dv6 series, so dv6-6c10us is the specific model.

    • Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.
The easiest way to do this is to use the information from a PUBLISHED Speccy report.
See: Speccy - Publish Snapshot of your System Specs

Post the link to the report that Speccy gives you and also open the Speccy link.
Then click here to view your System Specs on this forum.

When you have both windows open, put them side-by-side and simply copy the information, field by field, from the Speccy report to your System Specs.

To see what information other members provide in their System Specs, click on My System Specs in the lower left of any post by any member.

    Thanks

  7. Thanks, could you also post the link to the Speecy publish, there's lots of information in there that could help (event items, driver versions ...)

Did you try what Dave suggested?

I'd still like to see the other information I requested in post# 3 - did you try any of those suggestions?

    Any luck?

    External Hard Drive Issue.

Hi Guys, I hope this post is appropriate in this thread (I'm new at this, and a bit of a novice). My system sees my 3T WD external drive, but won't let me access it (and as you will see, it gives it a number, but not a letter). My 500GB Sony external drive (pulled from my crashed VIAO) lets me access documents, etc., but no user data, such as appdata (where my emails are stored from Thunderbird). Two separate issues, don't know if they're related. Here are my screen snips:

    Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

    Lee Jay

p.s. tried removing and re-installing the WD as Dave suggested, but got the same result. I'm using a USB 3.0 in my new Windows 10 laptop.
