I just did a factory restore of a Dell that put Version 10240 back on but after a few hours downloading of updates now have Version 1607 Build 14393.693 on it.

And Yes, Version 1607 is the Anniversary Update over Version 1511 [version number changes are usually an Upgrade with Build numbers being updates to that].

Well, that's great. I hope I can get to that result someday. My system says Windows Version 10.0 (Build 10240)

Do you have any folders starting "$Windows" on this drive or others?
As Bree says you will need to show hidden files. (See this Tutorial if you don't know how.)

Did you even try the possible solution I suggested in post #8?

I am still reading up on this possibility. My computer skill is probably intermediate. But I am finding a slight learning curve here. My first computer was an IBM PC Jr. back in the 1984. I have had several since then, and have even assembled my own from time to time. Plus I am finding being in my 70's isn't helping anything. I will try your suggestion as soon as I can get it straight in my mind.

There is no learning curve here. Download the ISO, tutorial I linked to in post #8 has clear illustrated instructions. When downloaded, double click the ISO file, Windows will add it (mount) to your system as virtual DVD drive, you will see it in This PC as any other drive. Open it, double click Setup to start upgrade.

When I double click the .iso file a window comes up asking what app I want to use to open this file.

Odd. Anyway, no problems, select Explorer (the one showing a folder icon).

Ok done. Running Setup now. TTYL

Yes. That's the Windows 10 setup program. When you double click it, so called Windows UAC (User Account Control) prompt will be shown because it requires administrative privileges. Simply click Yes to allow setup to start:

Do not panic when first nothing happens, it can take up to a minute for setup to start. Just wait patiently, when setup finally starts it is quite self-explanatory. Just follow the on-screen prompts / instructions.

If any doubts, if you do not know what to click or how to proceed, come back here and post your question. I just started setup from virtual DVD (ISO image) to be ready in case you need further assistance and can get screenshots fast to show you how to proceed, where and what to click *Smile

It may be that this default wasn't set in 10240 (I don't have a system image to hand for 10240 to restore and check). 10240 can certainly mount .iso files. If asked for the app to open them you should choose Windows Explorer. You may have to browse for it. It's C:\Windows\explorer.exe

The update failed at the same place it always has in the past. But this is the first time it ever gave me error codes in Windows after the update was rolled back.

The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP operation.

Is your whole Windows installation on drive C:, or have you possibly moved some of your user profile folders (Documents, Pictures, Music and so on) to an other drive than C:?

Everything is on C: drive. I do have an external USB HDD, and a USB thumb drive for backups and storage only.
