Windows 10: File Explorer Internal Errors and App Default Resets

I've been working with one of our users that is getting "An internal error occurred" when trying to open PDFs in File Explorer. They are also seeing the PDF default constantly switch back to Edge.


On the affected machine, I have:

Recreated the user's profile in windows

Run System File Checker with no errors found

I loaded a separate, fresh machine, only installing Office 365 and OneDrive. This worked for a day, but issues started happening again.

Wiped and reinstalled Windows on that same PC and had the user sign in again, but accessing files from a shared network drive to eliminate OneDrive as an issue. Just like before, this only worked for a day or two before the issues reappeared.


I think I am about to go crazy, since this issue follows the user, no matter which machine I load for them, and no matter what applications I load, or leave off the machine.

Could this be an issue with one of the PDFs they work with corrupting the rest of the system?

Is there any log file or way to determine what exactly is calling the Internal Error dialog?

Win10: set 'view' default in file explorer

I suggest you to follow the below steps how to set file explorer as default and check if it helps.

1. In the search box type as “settings”.

2. Go to “system” and click on “default apps”.

3.Then click on “set default apps by”.

4. Select “File Explorer from the list” and click on “choose defaults for this program”.

5. Then check the box “select all” and click on “save.

6. Then click on “ok”.

To disable "An app default was reset" pop up window

Suggest you have a program installed which is being seen as incompatible.

reset system folder (windows) permission back to default / original state

I would suggest you to try the following steps:

• Click "Search" and type File explorer options,Select it from the options
  
• Click on Restore defaults.
• Click Apply and OK.
