File Explorer Missing Disk Space Readout From Drives With Long Names

So, basically.. I know exactly what is happening here, but I don't know how to fix it. This was something changed in an earlier update that I've been putting up with for a few months now.

I tend to use longer names for my drives to keep things organized and looking nice. It used to be that if a name was too long it would truncate the name in file explorers tile view, basically the end of it would fade away behind the drive letter. What it does now, is it puts the rest of the name and/or the drive letter on a second line, moves the bar indicating disk usage down a line, and completely removes the actual digital readout of drive space. If I shorten the name it returns the readout, but I would prefer not to have to do that. Does anyone know a way to make this return to its old behavior?

For what it's worth, I AM on the Insider Preview builds (16299.19 currently) but seeing as its been doing this for some months now, I believe it would do this on an up to date consumer build as well.

Here is a screenshot if you can't quite understand what I'm describing.

    Second hard drive unaccessible

My second hard drive on my ASUS laptop (Windows 10) went somewhat missing. Previously named the "D" drive and containing 498GB of space (C drive is about 372 GB), I now cannot find it anywhere in the file explorer.

When going to Control Panel > Administrative tools > Computer Management > Disk Management, I can see the C drive along with a few other smaller (<1 GB) drives, as well as what seems to be my D drive. It has 498GB, but the space for its name is blank, and
when I right-click on it, the only available options are "Delete Volume" and "Help" (all other actions are grayed out and unaccessible).

What can I do to regain access and be able to use my nearly half-terabyte drive?

  3. D Drive has become Free Space

There is no D: in file explorer unless I place a disk in my DVD-RW drive which the system the allocates as D.

If I boot the PC to miniXP from a boot disk there is a tool on the Hiren's boot disk that allows me to mount the Free space as a partition, at which point the explorer in miniXP can see all my data. I need something in Win10 which will allocate the "Free
    space" as D:

Notice there's more white space to the left of each drive icon now? This seems a common complaint in Fall Creators Update and this is what's leaving less space for your long names, that combined with the change to wordwrap instead of truncation is causing your problem. Whether this is a bug or by design remains to be seen. This effect was first noted here...

Tiles View in Windows Explorer screwed up after Fall Creators Update

Edit: apparently by design, seem the space is reserved for OneDrive Files on Demand icons, see post #21 in the above thread.

Even just a registry entry to make it switch back to truncation instead of word wrap would do wonders for this..

That's been like that since almost forever. Not something new. Long device/partition names truncate or totally wipe out the space needed for the numbers. Hover over the partition/drive and it pops up. I've never found a solution for it. As a test one time, I set my default font down to something around 8pt at default 100% resolution, and the disk space free and total size would show. Unfortunately, I could not see or read anything else in the system! *Smile So I just live with it knowing it's currently unavoidable, and has been for a long time.

No, that's not new. What is new is that the space allocated to the drive icon has suddenly doubled (and hence the space for the name shrunk). Names that were an acceptable length in all version up to 1703 are now far too long in 1709 - that's the change being complained about.

If you say so. Mine are just like they have been last few versions. Insider, too. Bottom line, if the name is now too long, it shrinks. Feedback Hub, or change the font/size to accommodate.

Or use a different display format.

First sight of the whitespace to the left of the drive icon being used for its planned purpose. Look at the Recipes folder here...
