  1. Folders I Add Won't Stay Pinned To Quick Launch

I upgraded Win 8.1 Pro to Win 10 Pro and I find that when I pin folders to the Quick Access, that they disappear from there the next time I start my laptop. Any help with this please?

    :)

  2. Document folder won't open from task bar

Using Microsoft 10...... I have a "file explorer" (file folder icon) on my task bar (old quick launch bar). I have my "documents" folder pinned in there (Quick Access). When I click on it, it won't open. Nothing happens. I unpinned and re-pinned it
and still the same. To access the documents folder I must go to "This PC" and select the document folder from there.

  3. I removed by Folder icon from bottom of my pc screen - short cut to get to all folders. I do not know how to restore it

It is pinned to taskbar by default. That was not the question in the post. And you have to add, PIN your user folder in Quick Access for it to be there. they could also just go to C:\Users and PIN their user folder to start or in Quick access. . can not
PIN user folder to taskbar. You can add it to the Library. I do not use that. it is worthless.

  4. Folders I Add Won't Stay Pinned To Quick Launch

Are you still running with the initial upgrade install of 10? I would immediately expect that would be why you are running into this problem rather then any number of others that could have appeared. You might have to use a few add and remove folder tweaks in the guide for this in order to see the Quick Access refreshed if the "sfc /scannow" commnand at the "run" command line option or in the command prompt(admin) option to run the System File Checker tool fails to find anything needing replacement.

The guide I am referring to is How to Add or Remove Quick access in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 10 where you go into the system reg and change a value back and forth seeing a full system restart or shutdown in between the changes to 10 a good wake up call. The SFC tool you would run if this has been seen since 10 first went on as an indication that something didn't quite go on fully during the upgrade.

  5. Thanks Night Hawk. I ran sfc /scannow and it found corrupt files that could not be fixed. Using your links at the bottom of your post, I will do a fresh install of Windows 10. I had moved my Docs, music, pictures, etc, folders over to another partition after upgrading. I think I read somewhere that, to avoid problems when I do a fresh install, that I need to move them back, do you have any information about that?

  6. The clean install now will pack up the Program Files, Program Files(x86) folder on the 64bit Windows, and the users folders into the Window.old for anything you want to keep out of those. typically programs will stash things into the documents under the user account or under AppData\Local or AppData]Roaming for things like browsers that need to be retrieved by either moving files or copy & paste to back them up before seeing the Windows.old tossed.

For everything else here I back up the backups by manually backing things up as I go along to never be caught off guard! I can wipe either OS drive at any time and not have any worries between full system image backups as well as simply keeping duplicates of everything on separate storage drives. Previously since having worn out one of the two older storage/backup drives I ended up using the second to back up most of what was on the first! The second drive got shaky however.

The one thing I haven't seen since W7 however is the old Windows Easy Transfer option. With that you would browse through each folder on the drive to decide what would be included in a large backup archive prior to seeing Windows reinstalled or hopefully restored on the next newer version to come along. Since that was last seen with 77 the 3rd party sources are now offering online backup options by first downloading their programs. One example is PCmover Express with a free trial version as well as the regular full retail program. PCmover - Windows Migration from Laplink | Microsoft Recommended | Windows Easy Transfer

That's a 3rd party option however intended as a replacement for the Easy Transfer tool. Other then the three folders named however the only others effected would be the Windows directory, Perflogs, and ProgramData folders while unless you reformat the drive itself everything else will remain intact on the drive. Many opt to either reformat or if the drive has been in use for a few years nuke everything to see a fresh primary partition go on which takes care of everything in one shot! Everything then goes on fresh from scratch!

  7. Did a clean install and problem fixed. I use Macrium Reflect v6 Free, to image the C:\ onto two external HDD's & also manually copy my Main folders like Docs, Music, etc onto those drives as well.

Macrium Free does not back up Files & Folders as separate from creating an Image, only the paid versions are able to do that. Do you know of a good free program that will back up my Files & Folders faster than manually coping them?

The trial versions for various programs will see to that but on the limited time frame only. Here I went for the 2010 Acronis True Image Home edition still in use on 10! I don't even have to upgrade to the latest and can clone drives as well as create partial backups since it is a full version. Over the last 5yrs. however the investment has paid off for the often highly recommended program.

What you are seeing now for free backup programs store files on the Cloud not on the local drive(s)! One such program is MegaBackup seen at: MegaBackup — Unlimited cloud backup for your files

Two sites to browse for the safe at least freewares would be at Download.cnet and en-sonic.com or most commonly known as Softronic For Download.cnet Macrium Reflect is one of the ones listed for Windows 10 you can look over at: Backup Software for Windows - Free downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

Which see the best ratings? The "Top 5 Best Free Windows Backup Software" blog is found at: Top 5 Best Free Windows Backup Software

For partial backups here that doesn't require any 3rd party wares since I backup files with multiple downloads for downloads to different folders on separate drives as well as manually save individual files as I go along. That saves worry if a drive goes or a folder gets nuked accidentally. Best solution ever! And that of course is why the drives continue to get bigger and bigger as those files accumulate over time!

  9. Should also add. I have found that CCleaner likes to reset Quick Access, removing any pinned items.

  10. Why am I not surprised to hear that at all? All too often everybody screams "You got to have..." despite being cautioned it was not written with 10 in mind but XP, Vista, and 7, and likely not good for 8 and 8.1 either! It can trash the system by removing the wrong things!

People used to rave about registry cleaners too until the general warnings about the over use of them! Not every temp file is a disposable file either as various programs will tend to create and later clean up the temp files they use. You see that more so with 32bit apps swapping data out to temp files similar in nature to the paging file Windows uses. Hopefully you will be able to simply repin the folders you did have in the QA.

  11. Thanks for your advice Night Hawk. As an aside, I had a flashback as I read the above part of your post. Back in 1998, when I was given my first computer, a family hand-me-down being a Compaq Pentium 100, with 32MB of RAM (lol). I downloaded a trial piece of software called System Mechanic. I ran it and it said to delete the duplicate files it found, so I did. Darn computer would not start & myself not knowing anything about computers, I had to put it into the repair shop, which was expensive! Evidently, I had deleted some System Files. Thanks for the memory. lol

  12. Glad I read your post as I have used CC on occasions but not yet with Windows 10. I see they have it optimized for 10 now but I will wait a while. Piriform News - CCleaner v5.09

That must have been fun! Don;'t worry I think a good number of us end up trashing Windows at one time or another when first starting out or simply making a good in judgement like not looking ahead at something!

Case in Point a look at the first thing you see when arriving at CCleaner's site there that should be an "attention grabber" right away.

For the release of 10! In order words that suggests prevoius versions weren't suitable for 10?! Or maybe going back one or two versions is all it takes to end up seeing it trash the new version.

Never assume anything especially with freebie apps when going to try out a newer version of Windows. Once a newer version comes out like 10 is now as far as retail paid for softwares go the support information is generally updated or you can get in touch with the support staff at times to make an inquiry. For the VIPRE Internet Security av program here the 2014 version simply refused to install on 10!

At first I thought was from the initial flaky bugged out upgrade where I did a fast repair install and still the 2014 would not go on. I ended up with the 2016 beta version until subsequently seeing the clean install that followed where the 2015 went right on without a fuss. So that right there shows the type of program did make the difference as far as which version of some program will actually install and run correctly on a particular version or as seen with Acronis T.I. Home 2010 it's still works well on 10.
