    Freeze and restart playing BF1 [PSHED.dll, ntoskrnl.exe, hal.dll]

    Hi everyone

    Symptoms:

Every time I join a multiplayer game of BF1 the game freezes within 5-10 seconds, and eventually after about 10-15 seconds the machine reboots. I am unable to alt+tab or ctrl+alt+delete while it is frozen. No audio plays during the freeze.

Bluescreenviewer indicates that it is consistently the following files that are affected:

    Filename Address In Stack From Address To Address Size Time Stamp Time String Product Name File Description File Version Company Full Path hal.dll hal.dll+3beff fffff800`ef2e3000 fffff800`ef362000 0x0007f000 0x891afc00 22/11/2042 16:30:40 Microsoft® Windows® Operating System Hardware Abstraction Layer DLL 10.0.16299.248 (WinBuild.160101.0800) Microsoft Corporation C:\WINDOWS\system32\hal.dll ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.exe+382340 fffff800`eea0d000 fffff800`ef2e3000 0x008d6000 0x5a7e7659 10/02/2018 15:34:33 Microsoft® Windows® Operating System NT Kernel & System 10.0.16299.248 (WinBuild.160101.0800) Microsoft Corporation C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe PSHED.dll PSHED.dll+148a fffff80c`a0960000 fffff80c`a0977000 0x00017000 0xfe1a7c40 04/02/2105 10:56:48 Microsoft® Windows® Operating System Platform Specific Hardware Error Driver 10.0.16299.15 (WinBuild.160101.0800) Microsoft Corporation C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSHED.dll

    What I have tried:

    • Run Memtest overnight - no issues
    • CMOS reset
    • Repair BF1 from within Origin
    • Reinstall BF1
    • Completely reformat SSD (not keeping any user files), install Origin, install BF1, Install latest Nvidia driver (no 3D drivers, no HD audio drivers, no Geforce Experience)
    • Tried a new DP cable and checked connections
    • Stress tested GPU using FurMark and Heaven Benchmark (temperatures were ~70-75c and no errors or crashes)
    • Been through hundreds of troubleshooting posts online, including changing how PhysX is handled (CPU/GPU), ensured DX12 is deselected, adjusted various in game video settings.

    Current status

A brand new system running off a formatted and tested SSD with only Origin, BF1 and the latest video driver installed.

The same problem exists - I join a game, within 5-10 seconds the machine freezes.

I suspect a hardware issue with the GPU but just wanted people's opinions. Last time I took the GPU back to the store (for the same issue) they returned it saying it tested fine.

So far this only occurs with BF1. I currently can't test with any other demanding games because they are still downloading in Steam. I will test with ARMA 3 in a few hours when it's installed and update this post.

    Thanks for reading!

    Hi ,

My name is Fernando. I am a Microsoft Independent Advisor. I am here to guide you with possible resolution to the issue you are reporting.

Have you attempted to go to a Restore Point?

Restoring won't affect your personal files, but it will remove apps, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point was made.

    1. Select the Start button, type control panel and then choose it from the list of results.

    2. Search Control Panel for Recovery.

    3. Select Recovery > Open System Restore > Next.

Here is a link that might help you.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12415/...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let me know how it goes.

    Respectfully,

    Fernando Y.

    Freeze and restart playing BF1 [PSHED.dll, ntoskrnl.exe, hal.dll]

I ran Driver Verifier for about 4 hours, no issues.

I tried to edit this into the original post but couldn't figure out how, so here it is.

I now have Steam installed as well, so the complete list of installed programs is:

    Origin
    Battlefield 1
    Nvidia Driver 390.77-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql
    Steam
    DM Log Collector

    The issue remains the same.

Hardware issue is still the most likely explanation. Make sure you are not overclocking. I see you have not yet tried a CPU test.

    Thanks Phil

I ran Prime95 for about 20 minutes. When my cores reached 99c I stopped the test - there were no errors.

That's quite hot for only 20 mins testing. I wonder if you may in fact be getting problems because of inadequate cooling. Did you install the CPU yourself and provide good thermal contact using the thermal paste?

Next time you run the game also run a temperature monitor to check this out.

    Freeze and restart playing BF1 [PSHED.dll, ntoskrnl.exe, hal.dll]

That was using the first option in Prime95 - Small FFTs (maximum heat, FPU stress etc).

I ran it again and it the temps actually get to 99% almost immediately.

I have a Corsair HD-801 Water Cooling system on the CPU. I was careful to get a good contact when I installed it, although perhaps the contact has become compromised over time?

When I try to play BF1, the temps get to about 60c (report attached) before the game crashes. Same crash, exactly the same 3 files highlighted in bluescreenview.

    OpenHardwareMonitor.Report.txt

On my system the temp reaches a maximum of 80°C for the same test. This is air cooled with fans.

However, the fact that your game does not get above 60°C tends to rule out temperature effects.

Try posting a new set of logfiles using the beta08 log collector - provided at the end of the BSOD posting instructions. This provides some additional files that might be useful for checking your issue.
