Hal.dll crashes my laptop

The past few days, I've been getting random crashes whereby my laptop would just show a black screen accompanied with a repeated stuttering sound coming out of the audio. (I'm using headphones)

Sometimes it restarts, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, I just force shut down by holding the power button. I'm at my wits end. Currently in my final exams period for university so don't really have the luxury of time to send it in for a check.

Hope someone here will be kind enough to help sieve through the info.

I ran memtest and prime95 and Intel diagnostic tool, so doubt it's anything wrong with my RAM or CPU. As for SSD, I'm using a 950 Pro and 850 Evo. Both seem to be in good health in Samsung Magician. Disk checking also shows no errors. As for GPU, did some stress testing by playing some games and running UnigineHeaven. (Have not tried Furmark yet, planning to do so)

I have attached the files in a zip generated by dm log collector.

I will be eternally grateful to whoever is able to help me.

:)

Blue screen Machine check exception caused by hal.dll

I have a windows 10 laptop and it works fine,

But when i use word and i try to save a document my whole screen freezes for a sec and the blue screen comes up.

So the minidump said:

caused by driver: hal.dll

caused by address: hal.dll+364b1

It only crashes whenever i try to save. So is it my harddrive or something?

I don't know what to do.

Having some annoying Blue Screen issues.

It'll crash if the video drivers are crashing. Since hal.dll is crashing which can be cpu related, are you overclocking?'

Hi acefire,

Welcome to the 10forums *Smile

Please follow below suggestions carefully and let us know how it goes afterwards *Smile
If none if this helps improving system stability we'll continue with new troubleshooting steps from there.

Please remove all USB devices you do not need for controlling your system on a basic level.

Please reinstall/update all drivers from your manufacturer, for the Nvidia display drivers please check the end of this post.

Please check your manufacturer for BIOS updates, there are several of these reports in your event logs.
Code: Event[15454]: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Processor-Power Date: 2016-06-02T19:06:40.176 Event ID: 37 Task: N/A Level: Warning Opcode: Info Keyword: N/A User: S-1-5-18 User Name: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: Acefire Description: The speed of processor 5 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. System File Check
Please try following:
• Open an admin command prompt
• Copy/paste "sfc/scannow" (without quotes) and press enter
• When it finished reboot your system
• Open again an admin command prompt
• Enter sfc/scannow again
If sfc/scannow says "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" after the second SFC, please upload the cbs.log file located at %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\, if the file is too large try a 3rd party uploader like dropbox, onedrive, google drive, mediafire etc.
System File Check(SFC a.k.a. Windows Resource Protection) needs to have your system rebooted in order for sfc to try to fix the problems that it finds.
Make a photo of SFC and post it.

Please uninstall everything of Nvidia using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from your manufacturer. Be sure the clean install box is checked and only install the Graphics driver and the PhysX driver, you can use this tutorial to do so *Arrow NVIDIA Drivers - Avoid Problems - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hi, I appreciate your help.

I'm on my way for an exam now, but just some added information which might be useful.

I'm currently running the 365.19 driver. When I try to update to the latest 368.22 driver, I get this problem.

GTX 980M 368.22 Driver Update - YouTube

After I revert back it works fine again. If I were to reinstall the drivers, which version should I use?

Will try the system file checker later when I get home.

I've just edited my post, I forgot to change a small thing.

It is recommended that you install the latest drivers from your manufacturer.

Hal.dll crashes my laptop

That's the problem. I can't use the latest drivers. I tried using display driver uninstaller as advised by an nvidia representative and I always get that error in the video I posted.

Here is his exact reply to me after trying his suggestion to use display driver uninstaller.

the thing is, for laptrop or all-in-one PC, latest driver doesn't necessary mean good, that's why laptop manufacturer keep certifying stable driver for different models. At lease using 362.03 from Clevo is what they tested.

So should I down grade my current 365 driver lower to 362?

I know, but I didn't know what driver doesn't work for you.

If they recommend it.

I have uploaded the logs for the sfc and the screenshot of the 2nd time I ran it.

Do note that the error about img0.jpg has been around for a very long time.

I will now attempt to uninstall my driver and install the version recommended by clevo.

Btw, no BIOS updates are available.

EDIT: I have uploaded a screenshot which shows an error when trying to install the version recommended by clevo (362.03) I am now downloading driver 362.00 from nvidia.

Please try following command in admin command prompt
Code: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
If there are problems with RestoreHealth, please follow step 6 or 7 (depending on the file you have from the download) from the tutorial DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Tutorial

If there are problems with RestoreHealth, please follow step 6 or 7 (depending on the file you have from the download) from the tutorial DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Tutorial
Ok. Will try this after I'm done installing the 362.00 driver. I edited my previous just before u replied. Do check it out.

EDIT: I need help. Neither driver will install now. I keep getting the same issue as shown in the screenshot above. Do advise.

EDIT2: I noticed my GTX 980M now becomes Microsoft Basic Display Adapter in device manager. It has a small triangular exclamation mark and it has these lines under device status:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

The driver trying to start is not the same as the driver for the POSTed display adapter.

To clarify, I only get this message when I boot using my iGPU instead of my 980M. Either way I can't install the drivers.

EDIT3: Booting with my 980M, I went into device manager to get Microsoft to update the driver. It worked. Now it shows up as a GTX 980M. The driver installed is 362.09. Do I leave it as it is or install the older 362.03? (Both of these builds cannot be found from nvidia.)

Ran DISM the first time and it failed. Lucky I had a Win10 iso on hand. Now running Furmark to test the GPU.

Anything else I should do to try and narrow down the cause?

Please do NOT yet run Furmark, but see how it goes under normal circumstances.

What memtest did you run and for how many passes?
