Help! Login has disappeared when I boot

    Hello

After I reboot, there is no way to log into my account on the 'photograph' screen!

The screen is just a photograph with the time and date on it, plus two icons: a "connect to the internet" icon and a shut down icon. The "Connect to the internet" has a yellow triangle with an "!" on it. The computer is a Samsung Series 7 Ultra, and it normally connects via WiFi.

    What should I do next?

    J

    :)

Windows 10 hangs in boot up

    Hello,

I have done what you suggested. All of my drives are up to date and I unchecked the Turn on Fast Startup.

It has made the boot up slightly faster and the black screen has disappeared after the log in screen, but it still hangs on the pre-login screen.

    Thank you

Pressing Enter takes me to a darker version of the same image, with 3 icons on it.

    Connect to the internet
    Ease of Access
    Shut down

But there is nothing else on the screen.

  6. Only happens if you reboot?
Can you log in if you boot up from a cold start?
What were you doing before this last reboot?

I can't get in at all, not even with a complete shutdown and power off.
The computer was playing up and would not reboot properly without freezing.
I think it had just done a cumulative update which it SAID it had completed successfully.

Try this, power down, remove the battery and unplug the power pack. Then press and hold down the power button for about 5 seconds. Now plug the power pack in and have another try. If it was a sleep or hibernate issue this should fix it. If its something else it likely won't help.

My Samsung (Series 7 Ultra) does not contain a removable battery. I could let it drain I suppose if I have to. But rebooting gives a screen that just says "Samsung" for quite a long time.

Also I can't work out how to get to the BIOS - F8 during reboot does not get there.
It seems to me that I may need to format the disk and start again, but I would need to find a way to create
    A) Create a bootable Windows 10 DVD from this old borrowed Windows 7 PC
    B) Get the computer to boot from an external DVD.

    Wait - new developments
    A) I have found a Windows 10 recovery memory stick
    B) I am now getting a message that says "Press F4 to recover with factory image using Recovery"
Should I go ahead and press F4?
Will that put my whole computer back to how it arrived? (Windows 8 I think) Maybe that's my only hope a that point.

And if I do that should I actually re-format the C: drive (it is an SSD).

    Cheers

  12. If its a Windows 10 recovery drive it should restore Windows 10.
If it's a Windows 8 recovery disk it will be Windows 8.
Did you create that recovery drive?
Yes Factory image means back to the OOBE, Out Of the Box Experience. You could do a clean install with Windows 10 install media from here, https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/soft...load/windows10 Or try doing a repair with that media.

Yes, I created the memory stick as a Recovery drive.

I am slightly hazy about exactly what is on my SSD, because I installed a higher capacity drive (512GB instead of 128GB) than the one that the computer came with. I am assuming that their is a separate drive on my SSD for installing the operating system and that if I hit F4, I would get the hard C: drive part of the disk formatted and a fresh copy of Windows installed onto the C: drive, yes?

If I am really going to lose all my data and all my installations and get a virgin copy of Windows 8 installed, given that what I want is Windows 10 would I be better off to try to get the PC to boot off the memory stick? If so how would I do this?

  14. If you want to keep Windows 10, and the recovery drive is for Windows 8, booting from it isn't going to help things. Also, if it is an actual recovery drive created by the OEM utility on the PC, odds are it is just going to erase everything on the drive and restore a factory image. It will erase all partitions and create new ones. For me it wouldn't work after swapping hard drives on my ASUS laptop. I went from a large spinner drive to a smaller SSD though. Not to a bigger drive.
Your going to have to sort out how to access the BIOS to get anywhere though. You had it open to swap drives, so have another look and see if you can unplug the battery from the motherboard. Are you sure its F8?

OK I've discovered F2 seems to open BIOS. Although it seems very basic Samsung thing and I'm not sure how I'm going to get it to boot off anything other than its SSD. It doesn't seem to pay any attention to the memory stick so I'm going to try to create a Windows 10 DVD and see how far I can get with that...
