Windows 10: Help: Windows 10 won't shut down - I run out of solutions :(

Hey guys,

my Computer won't shut down. If you try to shut down the LED on the Powerbutton will continue to be on and you can clearly hear all the fans inside running. It's stuck in Limbo. Only after pressing the power button for a view seconds it properly shuts down.

I've spent weeks looking for a solution, now I'm just really disappointed by Windows and myself for not getting this fixed. I really hope you guys can help me.

this is my system:
Intel Core i5 2500k CPU
Asus P8P67 Rev 3. Mainboard
Kingston 16GB HyperX DDR3 RAM
Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD
2nd 500GB HDD
Corsair 500W CM9 PSU

this is what I've tried so far:
Disabled the Windows 10 hibernate / fast startup feature
Tried to downgrade the Intel Management Engine drivers to a 9.xx Version
Tried multiple versions of Intel Rapid Storage (now uninstalled it)
Tried multiple Intel Chipset drivers
Tried to disable every non-windows service to see if it's a software issue.
Replaced PSU

I'm done with it *Sad Tried to find a solution with Windows and Asus but both keep saying this is not a common issue.

I would really appreciate some help.

My HP laptop won't shut down properly.

My laptop won't shut down. I keep trying to shut it down as usual, but it stays on and it won't react to the normal way. what do I do? (I'm on windows 10) please help me because this is kind of stressing me out.

Some questions to help us troubleshoot:

1. If you go into safe mode will it shut down then? - this might point to it being a driver issue
2. Can you perform a restart?
3. Can you go into sleep mode?
4. Have you looked into the BIOS to see if you have the latest version and updated if needed?

thanks for your answer and sorry for my late reply.

• I didn't try the safe mode yet, will do as soon as I'm home and report.

• I can perform a restart. In fact, that's the only time the machine physically shuts down and then powers itself up. You can clearly hear that all fans stop spinning for like a second.

• I cannot use sleep mode. I can go into sleepmode - fans will continue spining though - but my machine won't wake up from sleep mode.

• The lates bios is patched, yes.

If you don't use the hibernate feature then you could try turning it off. This will automatically turn off fast start-up as well and often helps shut down. Hibernate is useful (and only then possibly) on laptops as it keeps details of your open programs by writing them to disk. On a desktop it is I think pointless as if you are shutting down you'll presumably save your work first anyway.

If you'd like to do this, go to administrator command prompt and enter powercfg -h off. You can see a tutorial about it here: Hibernate - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

 

Easy fix that's worked on roughly five different laptops now. GO in to Device Manager, find the Intel Management Engine, and right-click on it. Choose Properties, and the the Power tab. Check or uncheck the option shown below, then click OK to close all those windows. Try shutting down then.

 

DeaconFrost is on the right track:

"Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option is a disaster. My New Gigabyte P57W would not shut down consistently. I Googled and tried many remedies to no avail and was about to return the new computer for a refund. Then, I remembered that the above mentioned option caused my other computer to restart and not shut down. I solved that problem by unchecking all occurrences of the option. So, I decided unchecked every instance of the option in my new laptop and to my delight the computer now shuts down normally and consistently. How can MS let such a glaring error pass? I hope when they upgrade Windows 10, it does not reinstall this egregious option. Many hours of agravation spent over this crap! This needs to be promulgated to all Windows Users.

Btw. I tried to unistall my manually installed Version 9.xx to the newest one. Would that be an issue?

 

Julian, I have the same motherboard Asus P8P67 using window 10.
I was an early adopter with this MB.
Went from windows 7 to 10 recently with clean install.
My system specs are almost identical to yours.

What I have found is the this MB has a few startup and shut down issues.
But it depends what Bios version you are at.

I had to to go the latest version and that fixed all my issues soon after my 10 upgrade.
Smooth as silk now no issues.

That being said any Bios upgrade can be tricky and always a risk of making your system into a rock.
ALWAYS put the bios file on a USB stick formatted with FAT32, else the bios upgrade utility WILL
fail. I would also suggest you back up your system first.

If this doesn't fix the issue or you already have the latest bios then I suggest you backup and clean install.

Your model is an LE mine is a PRO version, that may be the difference.
Is your bios up to date?

 

I'm hoping someone else can explain why the Power Management tab is missing. I am running Intel's version 11.0.0.1157 that may have come from either Windows 10's setup or Windows Update. I didn't install this version on my own.

 

yes - that's the newest Bios Asus offers.

 

It should be there, but have you looked elsewhere, in device manager, for that option?
