  1. How do I manually do what win10 setup calls logging into a ms account?

Suppose I install Win10 but skip the stage that says logging into a microsoft account.

I'd like to know what that option does. Does it open the Edge browser and go to www.bing.com and log in there?

Does it log into multiple websites? If so, which? Does it log any particular programs in?

Suppose I ski that stage, then how would I manually do what that stage would do automatically?

    Thanks

    :)

Hi @andyharziner, welcome to tenforums.com! *Smile

If you add your MS Account during installation, it will merge whatever settings, personalization, etc. you have synced therein during the installation process.
If you skip that stage, you will be prompted to sign in with a local account instead.
You can switch to an MS account later in Settings/Accounts.

Its not "A "Microsoft acct ,its "YOUR" Microsoft acct ,like a old Hotmail.com acct or a new outlook.com one ,or any Microsoft acct you might have created over the years ,,just try going to the Microsoft store and downloading some free app and it will prompt for the acct there ,or any of the other ways other have posted

I have a Microsoft account, but there is no way I would ever consider using it to log in.

  10. I would suggest doing just the opposite. There are advantages to using your Microsoft ID. I use mine on all my devices to sync my preferences and other info across devices. To each his own though. If you prefer a local account go for it. I'd rather use all the features the OS has to offer.

We do not always agree but in this topic I could not agree more with you.

Using multiple computers and mobile devices, as well as being an avid regular OneDrive user, I wouldn't even dream using my Windows 10 machines without an MS account. The fact is that Windows 10 is designed and intended to be used with an MS account, to get most out of it and to really be able to utilize all its features.

Personally I find an advice to not use an MS account to be really bad advice. There's simply no cons in using the MS account.

The above does not mean I do not use local accounts; I have a local admin account on each of my machines for administrative purposes.

Note that I use my MS account all the time, just not as my primary log in. How would you log in if your Internet connection was down?

Again a good example how ignorance, not finding out the facts helps spreading false and invalid information!

After installing Windows 10 and creating your initial user profile using an MS account, you have no need to connect your PC to Internet ever again. Never ever! Yet, you can always sign in to Windows using your MS account.

Windows separates the user account name and the user profile name, creating a so called full (long) username by combining the computer name and user profile name. Your full username will always be Computer_Name\User_Profile_Name and signing in to Windows will happen using these full username credentials.

When signing in with an MS account you will of course see your MS email address and enter the password for it, but in reality under the hood Windows does not sign the MS account user "Larry.Laffer@AnyEmailProvider.com" in to Windows in PC named as "LarrysMonsterRig" with that email address but instead with "LarrysMonsterRig\Larry".

A bit complicated, see this video for better explanation for username, user profile name and full username:

(Video from the thread Windows 10 instructional videos by Ten Forums members)

In short: Windows and your PC do not need to be connected to the Internet for a user to sign in with an MS account, because the actual sign-in process and user credentials checking is based on the user profile name and the full username (Computer_Name\User_Profile_Name) instead of the MS account name.

Even shorter: Of course you can always sign in to Windows with an MS account, regardless if you have or do not have Internet connection!
