Windows 10: How to bring back the old resizable Start Menu

• ​Right click on the Start Button and select "Run"
• Type "regedit"
• Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Explorer>Advance
• Create a new DWORD (32-bit) value, call it "EnableXamlStartMenu" without the quote marks
• Restart Explorer

just done it on mine as i perfer that start menu to new one

use right click on the start menu. this brings up the start menu.

if you left click, this will bring up the apps screen, but this still has some start menu functions on it. if the apps screen is opening at full screen, then you just have to resize it.

 

Bring back the classic start menu!

I did a detail-by-detail comparison of the Windows 7 Start menu and the Windows 10 Start menu and found them virtually identical in
functionality - by that I mean they do virtually all the same tasks. They just look different.

Almost all of the functionality that Windows 10 appears to be missing can be added back. For example, you can pin Control Panel and Help and Support to Start as tiles. You can add folders to All apps.

There are few clear differences. Favorites is not there because Microsoft has dropped that feature and replaced it by Quick Access. There's no longer a link in the Start menu for This PC but that was redundant anyway, since File Explorer gets you to the
same place.

In my case, I don't like the way the new Start menu looks and I don't like that I have to make changes to make it work like the Windows 7 Start menu. So I gave Stardock five bucks for Start10 and I'm very happy.

The Windows 10 Start menu is not going away and it's never going to look like Windows 7. So get over it. Either learn to like it or get a Start menu replacement and move on.

 

Thanks Dave but it was working for me anyway. I saw Jimbo had a problem with it and I assumed it was VMware.

Can I ask - are you running in a VM or not?

 

no i got it on a spare hard drive not VM perfer to run it on real hardware rather that vm to test everything works

Could you post a screen shot of the results and try to stack a few small icons vertically

That is one thing I like to do stack vertically in a single row but now the width is twice as wide as it was prior but the old right column would not stack a single row

Here is a ss, I wondered about it to. It works as you can see in properties that customize is no longer shaded out

 

as you can see it works fine *Smile

 

The only thing is that you can make fully customize your start menu if you don't live in the US.

Do you have to set the Dword to 1. Doesn't seem to make any difference for me.

I suspect that on a laptop with average resolution 1366 X 768 the setting might not work anyway.
