Windows 10: How to get Windows 10 to spell check uppercase words.

Dalchina, those files are only for User added or excluded words. Did you try reinstalling desired language? And check under Settings / apps / Manage optional .... if any language options can be downloaded?

 

Thanks. That's what I'd concluded (see above).
No, nothing more to download. When I changed from US to UK, I did all the downloads at that time. I don't want to try messing around with switching language, as it is relatively hard to get all aligned for Cortana and searching Settings to work without 'Search results aren't quite ready yet'.

 

I know, language settings can be pain in... if doesn't work as it should.
I remember Kari have some excellent tutorial about switching language from default, but guess you checked it all anyway *Wink

The built-in Windows spell checker is effective in universal apps, not desktop programs.
I believe I did read that somewhere.

It does work for me in, say, Calendar, but not for text in upper case.
Note: unsurprisingly, Tinyspell, conversely, only works in desktop programs.

 

You could read that on several occasions here on Tenforums.. It is known fact. But how is this relevant to OP problem?

Edit: oh, it explains your problem.. *Smile Yes, only in Mail, Calendar, Onenote etc (don't remember anything else right now..)... Edge!

 

Hi, while my experience is that it doesn't work in desktop programs, Brink says it does work for him e.g. in Notepad. (You can read his reply at the end of the tutorial about spell check).

I had Windows 10 EN-US installed as the upgrade for my OEM W7 (long story short: Toshiba's chosen OS for a UK model was a US base language!). I lost all my installed UK language packs with the upgrade to 1511. Rather than go through all that again with the next upgrade, I did an in-place install of 1511 EN-GB to switch my base language to UK English. Now, like Brink, I have UK spelling working in 'some of the other included desktop apps' such as IE11, but excluding notepad.

 

Ok, I had read 'ex' as meaning 'example'. My conclusion is it seems a somewhat fragile feature, not to be depended upon, with a good number of issues reported if you search the net.

I find it does not work with uppercase text. Autocorrect does work reasonably in lower case.

While Tinyspell is much more consistent (and does work in Notepad), the free version does not allow other than US English; the paid version allows a range of other dictionaries.

Can you confirm that with picture (like in mail app)? It works for me in Firefox, but FF has its own spell checking system..

Did you see that answer Kari gave to an user about complete switching of default language. Thought, that it would restore your language components, too.

 

Yes, I had seen that previously, thanks. My interest in this is rather more curiosity and academic- having noted the feature exists, I'm not so worried about getting it to work in desktop apps unless doing so is quite trivial and would definitely work, as the significant programs I use have their own spell checker anyway.

 

This thread has been slightly hijacked lol. I have submitted a support ticket to the developer of the application I originally posted about, and hope to learn soon if they have included a very broken spell checking feature or if it is in fact windows changing the default preference of ignoring uppercase formatting without a solution to revert back.
