Windows 10: I need help with some internet connectivity.

More information: with the downloaded upgrade to Malwarebytes, the "custom" scan became an option! However, when I tapped "configure" WIN 10 tried to connect to internet and was unable. Meantime Malwarebytes began its normal scan with no added configuration.

I do not have, or at least could not find, free file viewer on my computer; did you see it somewhere or were you just helping me with a warning?

Remnants of FreeFileViewer were found in the scans, that's why I mentioned it. It's a case where you download/install a free program and it tries to install all other kinds of junk, that's all,

 

Okay the first thing I'd like to do is go through the installed programs and get those taken care of. The ones that need to be removed can be done now, and the ones that need updating will have to be done when the system is back online.

Let's go ahead and reset all browsers. This will remove any modifications, including add-ons/extensions.

Reset Edge

We have a tutorial on this, with a small PowerShell script that needs to be downloaded. Since you can't download, you can create the script and run it. Here's the tutorial; you can view it on the XP system:

I am having trouble uninstalling Firefox.

Yes, I am using an USB port for cable; the connection built into the motherboard quit working properly. I did not know anything about a wireless ethernet connection or else did not have the proper drivers to use wireless when Win 10 started acting up.

Mozilla Firefox refuses to uninstall (I tell it to and it acts like it is going away but it never leaves; stayed there acting like leaving for hours). I have tried to remove it 4 times.

Before we dumped several items, I used Avast. For back up I use Google Chrome which I really do not like. When using chrome, I go to google.com to avoid its tracking.

I think I ran reset edge, it did not come up like your example but all of the names were correct and I got it on to and ran it from the desktop.

 

We just wanted to reset Firefox (and all your other browsers), not uninstall it. Is there a reason you want to uninstall it?

 

For the record, I have always solved network problems by disabling all the network optimizing features.
So unless you need network sharing or something, just remove all network protocols and disable IPv6.
It sure made my WiFi connection rock solid, setting up a custom DNS and a static IP as well. Like this:

I'd like to run a system file check, to make sure all your system files are intact. Especially since that W10 updater was still in your installed programs list.

1. Run Windows Update - check for updates and see if you get anything

2. Right-click on the start button and select Command Prompt (Admin). In the black box that opens, please type the following, and press enter:

You must open an Admin Command Prompt, not a regular comand prompt:





(PowerShell is the same thing - regular and Admin)

You can tell if you're in an Admin Control Prompt, because you'll get the UAC popup asking you to allow this program, and you'll see the cursor blinking after C:\Windows\system32 and not C:\Users\yourusername.
