Is it safe to go ahead and download the Creators Update?

Nah - we are already on 10563.11. For vast majority quite safe to upgrade.

    Create image backup, upgrade.

Vast majority will have no significant if any issues.

Is it safe to go ahead and download the Creators Update?

The problem is, though, that 90% of the posts on the internet regarding any Windows OS will be the problems so people use that to say, "If not a tech savvy then better just wait for all final fixes..." What they fail to take into account, though, is that it is probably less than 1% of all the total people that have that OS are the ones posting on the internet.

I know that I can't help a lot of people on this forum with their problems because I've got a dozen computers on my home network that are not have any issues at all with Windows 10 - now on 15063.11.

  5. The problem is that the base system they are upgrading from is corrupt. And can therefore not be upgraded properly. People tend to run Windows as Admin and install a bunch of useless software. The end result is that something breaks.

But yes, if something is working great, then there is no point rushing into next upgrade.

    Hi there

Why not try it as a VM first - then if it breaks wait until fixes are released.

Not sure what the current "Activation" is if you download it manually - I'd imagine it would be a bit like the Insider program where even if Windows isn't actually activated it works normally until (at least) the next release or longer.

    Cheers

It the user in question doesn't do something specific to block it, the upgrade is just going to come through Windows Update on the host anyway. Personally, I would rather download the ISO file and upgrade myself rather than having Windows Update do it.

Is it safe to go ahead and download the Creators Update?

Absolutely- was just looking at a thread where a user with a data cap was declining downloading one to do an in-place upgrade repair install... if you download it once, you can do repeat attempts (if necessary), multiple PCs, future clean installs or in-place upgrade repair, + create a bootable medium.

  9. Does it matter if you download the ISO or the update files? Personally I prefer the update files as they are delivered as an .ESD-file, which is a lot smaller than the ISO.

The 64-bit ESD is ~3GB, while the ISO is ~4GB, depending on edition. Both contain exactly the same information.

But before starting the upgrade process, I would create an ISO of the ESD-file using the tools and guides we have available here at TenForums:

ESD to ISO - Create Bootable ISO from Windows 10 ESD File

Easy peacy, 1, 2, 3...DONE! ...and you saved 1GB on data usage on metered connection. *Wink

I've always used the clean install vis ISO method going back to Windows 7. It just means less things can go wrong if you're trying to upgrade over an existing OS.

  11. Yep, I DO clean install every now and then too, but usually I don't...I seem to have been able to keep the system clean for a very long time now. I do however NOT need the ISO for a clean install, for me the setup files are enough (Well, essentially that is the full ISO anyways, except no bootable media) *Smile

    Hi there

while undoubtedly correct -- where in W.Europe, Australia, NZ, Singapore, Japan, USA or even Russia these days do you have to put up with "Metered Connections" -- and surely if some Dinosaur operators are still peddling these types of contracts isn't it time you switched -- even a lower speed Satellite Internet connection will be cheaper in the long run than this metered rubbish.

Out in the Boondocks Satellite connections (albeit slower than cable etc) are usually available and without metering - are probably far cheaper than than initial "Cheaper monthly fee" for a metered approach.

If you really have to put up with equivalent of C19 connections in C21 - just take yourself to an Internet Cafe and download the ISO to USB !!! plus complain to your regulatory authority about lack of competition in Internet access as most countries in the Western Sphere have some type of "Restraint of Trade" conditions to prevent people being forced into unrealistic and expensive contracts.

    Cheers

  13. Is it safe to go ahead and download the Creators Update?

    @jimbo45

I have 350/25Mbit (could get up to 1/1Gbit) WAN over Optical Fiber, 2 x 100/50Mbit LTE (metered and no data transfer caps, unlimited SMS, unlimited MMS, unlimited Phone calls within my country)

For all this I only pay about 70.00/Month, which is a bargain. *chuckle

EDIT: I am excited to get my hands on 5th Generation Mobile Data Connection, once available. According to specs, we should reach speeds of up to 300Mbit and in the future even Gbit speeds should be possible. So please don't say, metered connections suck, because they don't. They suck in the US, that I know. No offense intended to anyone. *Tongue

  14. Everybody who are afraid of upgrading to Windows 10 Creators Edition should visit this page:

    Windows 10 release information

And wait for Version 1703 to reach Current Branch for Business status (Not only RTM or Current Branch), then it is safe to upgrade. Check that page every time you are wondering whether to upgrade or not. Safest is to always wait for the CBB-status.
