Is My Windows 10 Corrupt - Settings Not Being Saved And Possibly More

Hi all. Everything was going great until a couple of hours ago. I got up from my computer, came back and it was rebooting itself. When it came back up I couldn't access any windows functions like the start menu, taskbar settings, clock, and so forth. I ran an SFC and DISM scan and both came up clean. I then used this tool and got the function of everything again.

FixWin for Windows 10: Repair problems and issues in a click

So then I changed all my taskbar settings back to how they were but now when I reboot they won't save my settings. There's also a couple little issues that I swear weren't like they are now, but I really don't know. For instance, I have the "settings" tab saved to my start menu - I swear it used to say "settings" underneath it like all my other saved tabs - but now it just shows the gear picture. I have a "windows update" tab that now just says windows update but with no picture. Also, when I go into Windows Update and click on "view installed update history", I also could've sworn that it used to list everything right there.

Maybe I'm wrong about those couple of issues, but the fact that my taskbar settings are not being saved means there's definitely an issue with atleast one thing - and I now can't help but think that there might be other issues.

Any theories? Is there a way to get my settings to save - but much more importantly - is something now permanently corrupted? I'm just a basic guy who swears at the top of his lungs when computers go awry, and would be scared half to death to do something as drastic as reinstall windows.

    Thanks, Chris

Edit: Ok, there is more stuff that is wrong. When I tried to take out my usb thumb drive it wouldn't give me the pop up message that it was Ok to do so. When I unplugged my headphones it also usually gives me a message that they were just unplugged, and now I don't get that message.

    :)

    Settings are not being saved

Thank you for the feedback, Daniel. To assist you with your concern, the best option that we can take is to perform a restore from a system restore point if it has one that is dated back before the issue started.

If that option is not valid, then the next step is to perform a restore using an installation media. You can refer to this

    article
    on how to do this.

For further queries, feel free to respond.

    - that suggests you may have received a Windows upgrade to build 1709.

Do you have a folder called Windows.old on C: ?
If so, check its properties and creation date.

However, it should not be that you saw a major loss or change of functions as you report.

    What is your Windows build?
    Windows key + R, winver

Windows may reboot for other reasons- e.g. if a health check discovers a disk problem.

Do you have Active Hours set (in Settings) and if so was the reboot within the set period?

Download a small free utility called BluescreenView and see if that tells you of any event.

Thanks guys. So I'm at work but I did check a bunch of these things on my way out. The only thing I wasn't able to do yet was the nirsoft scan. So these are some of the things I remember.

My build is the latest - 1709.

I don't believe my computer was set to reboot at certain hours. I've had 1709 for a month or two now and it's never rebooted before. As of this morning my computer said I was up to date updates wise. The last update was on Feb. 18th though, so nothing from yesterdays USB patch as of yet.

So even though I haven't run the nirsoft scan yet - and maybe that will tell me something (probably won't understand it if it's too techie though to be honest) - but things like the USB patch, even if I had it installed already, it doesn't seem to me that's a major thing because.........the actual reboot into the "nothing is working" part.........into my taskbar settings won't save after a reboot part.........well.......those things, just aren't right. The USB problem would appear to be one of possibly several collateral damage issues with this reboot. I'm really curious as to what this nirsoft scan will say. I'm not quite sure why an SFC and DISM scan came up clean. Aren't those supposed to detect issues like this???

    Thanks, Chris

The Nirsoft tool will quickly show you if you have any minidump files- related to a BSOD.

If you have, see if the date/time relates to a restart. The tool shows you the content too.

Random restarts can also be caused by hardware problems of course.

Please try to answer questions posted- it will help you.

Thanks. I'll do these when I get home tonight and report back.

Ok, I couldn't wait, I went home at lunch time, lol.

    DESKTOP-GI4BH7F (2018-03-06 12 09).zip

I also ran the nirsoft scan, but unless I was doing it wrong, nothing came up on the screen. It did say in the very bottom left corner "0 crashes".

And as for the Windows Old folder - Yes on February 17th

    Hope some of this helps.

Is My Windows 10 Corrupt - Settings Not Being Saved And Possibly More

Holy crap. Gimme time to digest this please, this is a bit overwhelming at the moment.

  14. CT71 Win User
Ok, if you don't mind I'd really like to ask a bunch of questions. None of them are out of disrespect, I sincerely promise, it's just there was alot to take in all at one time. I came here for help because I wouldn't have a clue otherwise, so please don't take these questions as disrespectful in any way in you trying to help me.

    1. Is there anyway that we know what may have caused the BSOD from the logs I provided? I only ask that because the only issue I've ever had with this computer is with front panel USB port errors every now and then. And when my computer rebooted suddenly the other day, I did have a thumb drive copying files in there at the time. I ran the Windows USB Troubleshooter and it said this: "The USB Controller is in a failed state or is not currently installed". Not sure why it said that - I did try the thumbdrive since and it did work.

    2. Does every last step need to be done all at once? Like right down to the end about uninstalling Avast and Malwarebytes............or is this a step by step process where everything could possibly be fixed before we get to the end. I ask this because I'm fairly positive I don't have the latest drivers installed because I know that I recently got a pop up from Dell about newer ones available. The reason I didn't install them was because I was once told that if your computer runs perfectly fine without any bugs there's really no need to update drivers. And since I've never had anything like this happen in 20 years, I didn't want to do something as drastic (for me anyways) as that.

    3. Except for the few bugs I've noticed (taskbar settings not saving at reboot, etc.) - is there any actual internal harm from using my computer right now, and will it get deterioratingly worse with use. Ok, so the reason I ask this one is because I have two different sets of speakers and an amplifier on order from Amazon which need to be auditioned on my computer. This really absolutely needs to be done - I live on an island, and counting on having Amazon to be able to order things is a must financially. Since I order so many things, and return so many things - returning too many things is not good - and these speakers weigh a ton - I cannot return them only to reorder them again. So I really need my computer for the next month.

    Thanks again.

Also, what is "The drive file system is corrupt. The master file table is corrupt (MFT)"

I've read a little bit about it online and I keep seeing "unable to access your files" in all the mentioned articles. I'm pretty sure I can still do that, unless I'm getting that statement confused with something different.
