Just to note, I may have not answered all questions but I have as many as I could. For some questions I would like to see the result of System File Checker, see the end of this post for how to perform a system check and uploading the log of it.

Yes please, in this way I can see new events and give a new analysis *Smile

I suggest that you write down what you want and what that guy would do for you, try to do research about what you want and see what the results are compared to what the tech would do. This will help you to approach the tech in a better way, because you know better what you are talking about *Smile

OEM compatibility isn't really something I would call very interesting, but that is my opinion.

Yes, if one doesn't know how to properly read dumps and other files that are asked for.
There can be a few reasons why someone doesn't suggest to remove such programs, like that they don't ask for such data as they do not think it is necessary.
But coming back to "The dumps clearly show that Firefox is corrupting memory in a way that makes Windows unstable, so Windows is blue-screening itself to prevent ongoing corruption. The fault itself is somewhere in Firefox, and we don't have the possibility of debugging that."Either I'm not properly reading the dumps or am missing something or he is just very wrong, I have only once seen Firefox as a cause because of extensions/plugins being very improper coded from other developers but not from Firefox directly.

Not a problem, you can learn it yourself in a matter of time if you want it. Asking others for help is a good way to extend yourself so you learn things from a different view *Smile

In simple words, a change has corrupted data that could allow malicious things to happen.

Could you please make a screenshot of your UAC setting and check following tutorial
Account Type - Change in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Most of these errors occur when an unexpected shutdown has occured, these can be ignored.

That should easily be possible, though it can happen that some user settings are changed to default when running programs for 'cleaning' the system.

I've read the page largely, I cannot believe that they did not do anything with those IObit programs and that they did not ask certain questions but instead ignored many more relevant things than what they were up to.
I tried to create an account, but it seems someone has taken my username...

I'll post a new reply when I'm home to answer your questions *Smile

The problem is that they did nothing with the IObit stuff you mentioned, IObit stuff is known for breaking the system and leave it unbootable. It is the same for most other similar programs which is why it is strongly recommended to stay away from those kind of programs. Reverting back with a restore point or another backup is 1 of the only solutions, the other is a complete format of the installation and start all over again if a backup or restore point does not work.

    An important error to note.

Yes - my points exactly. Thank you for reading it. Other than your stress on Driver Booster, what category of programs do you mean - in general - for me to avoid? Until Anthony suggested the whole kit, I never used programs like that. I did like that it regularly cleaned out junk files and fixed registry and broken shortcuts, I admit. I could clean out Temp files more often...

As far as undoing the damage from those programs, they've been running constantly since January. It fixed files constantly. I can't undo those changes without a major headache. Solving BSODs pushed that issue to the background.
Since its installation is almost simultaneous to Win10 upgrade, I figured I would reset (or refresh) if I had to.
Do you still think I need to reverse my system - if that's (system) what was affected? By the way, I ran a diagnostic tool for Iobit, after a particular cleanup tool deleted more than anticipated and another minor cosmetic thing. It was so thorough, I felt I was sharing too much considering the scope of my complaint, which was immediate and SMALL. If that diagnostic is of value to you, I could dig it out of Recycle Bin.

I installed the May Cumulative Updates last night. Easy breezy!

    An important error to note.
Could this be my external drive? I saw drive errors on Event Viewer when I was regularly checking, but in the next day or two, drive errors were not detected. Don't you degrade the drive every time you run scans? What is a paging operation? Could it be something like when I attempt to run Backup & Restore, it doesn't see my external drive immediately?

I will run this check after I run SFC for you. I've been reading election results ALL afternoon.

I quickly scanned the Permissions link, which is excellent. This time of day it's often impossible for me to muddle through technical instructions, so I don't. I will though, ask the obvious - As I own the device and I am the only user, other than me having the ability to (handily) screw up my own computer, what are the proper settings? Do I need to worry about anything? This still won't help me with Notepad. I didn't know to keep the Admin account user always activated for easy access. What a concept!

I didn't set up Win10, Anthony did. Do you still want to have a conversation with him?
Does software come with certain inarguable - or inherent - permissions? I don't understand "inherited" permissions and were they passed on in the upgrade or created from scratch?

I could greatly benefit from understanding where on my system the real power lies to change permissions. If anything happens, I grant too much, not too little. Fixing permissions is on my list of things to do when I'm ready to deal with the installation and cleanup of Win10.

    Thank you.

I don't see a way to delete documents in my attachments file. It says it deletes them if not used, so am I viewing the image of my attachments and not actually taking up space?

  6. Axe0,

See CBS log (1) for pre-scan results. Will upload second scan shortly. Surprise! It wasn't clean like last time, but at least it can be repaired.

Real quick I cannot find that SFC repaired stuff.

Not much chance I'm going to remember such a change *Wink

Programs that claim to speed up things a few 100% percent, like Advanced SystemCare claims to speed up several things a few 100% percent what is just impossible.
There was recently a thread created for a discussion about programs to avoid, but I cannot find it back unfortunately.

There is a program I/we recommend as long as you're very careful with certain features like registry cleaning, Ccleaner.
Ccleaner does what it says, but it does do nothing more and that is what most programs do wrong, many want to do too much causing problems.
With Ccleaner you can cleanup certain places, cleanup cookies, have an overview of all tasks, restore points, etc.
Many don't find Ccleaner a proper tool, but I would say it is the best you can find on the internet that does its job proper and nothing more.

Possibly, I did not find the right hard drive back so I cannot say with certainty.

Nope, hard drives are read/write devices. The scans read/write the drives.
With the right tools you can identify the status of the hard drive without causing problems, there are some programs who can cause problems but that is because of improper coding.

You know what the pagefile is and what the purpose of it is?

    Yes.

The only permission software sometimes needs is administrator permission, with the standard settings programs ask everytime if you would grand them temporary permission for certain things. This permission is gone when the program is finished (when the program is closed).

I hope my answer above answers this question?

I'll post some screenshots explaining how to delete attachments later *Smile

  9. Axe0,

The only things that I can think of is my folder was too crowded or I did it wrong. For the first time, I found the X for delete.

    Thank you.

I'll read the rest of your post now and go back to my morning routine.

  11. Axe0,

Something is new. I'm not happy and you won't be either. While trying to delete the folders in my attachments, I inadvertently turned off the "allow Flash now." Because I though it might interfere with my being able to see the instructions, I then refreshed, deleted cookies here and on FF, and reloaded several times, without success. I went to add-ons to change my settings to Always Allow. Of course, after I finished I forgot to change my settings back. I went to my inbox and clicked on something that used to cause the crashes ---and of course, I got a BSOD, kernel security error failure again. After the restart, I first fixed Flash settings back to "always ask." I checked Event logs which again reported the old error: "Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with 0x80070005." Then I ran wushowhide.diag. and hid the update again. After doing both, I went back and opened the mail which caused the crash and got through without any issues. I'm back to where I was last Friday. I'm certain that the CU didn't try and fail to install because the computer restarted quickly. I didn't create the log because you are working on last night's logs. I look forward to your response. (And I'll do it later.)

Before all this, though, I told you that I installed KB3156421 successfully. Turns out that it didn't. When I turned on my computer this morning, BitDefender notified me that it wasn't on. I manually opened it and watched it scan. It scanned the Cumulative Update. I thought a few things: Shouldn't this be whitelisted (or whatever)? It's odd that even with a couple of restarts last night, I did not get any notification that the update did not install until this morning, and that I should contact BD. Meanwhile, I found one forum where four people determined that BD & Win10 is iffy (only four). BD was quick and requested their diagnostic, which I sent a couple of hours ago.

Not that I wanted to bring this on me and my computer again, but you and I know that the way to determine which fix solved my BSODs was to turn Flash back on to "Always activate." I was fine not knowing. As this was determinative, you aren't going to be happy about this, either.

This morning, I also responded to another email from Anthony and told him that you wanted to talk to him, so the "intro," for what it's worth, has been made. Busy day.

    Thank you.

What browser are you using, it is better to change the settings for Flash to let you choose when you want to load Flash (this is done by right clicking it and choose 'run flash player') because Flash is a great target for malware and you do not want to get malware.

I totally forgot about Bitdefender free version, it is not compatible with Windows 10, I forgot about it because I use the total security version. The best AV I can recommend for you is Windows Defender, I know you've had trouble with it but it is the most stable one that rarely causes problems.

For the pagefile I suggest that you read this tutorial, the first part describes what the purpose of the pagefile is.
The best setting for the pagefile in 99% of the situations = 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives'
Virtual Memory Paging File - Change
In my words: if there is not enough RAM available for an operation, some of the data the RAM holds will be moved to the pagefile so the required space becomes available for the operation to be executed. The pagefile is on the hard drive, when data from the pagefile needs to go to the RAM it goes a bit slower because the speed of the hard drive is less than the speed of the RAM, this can cause a small lagging sometimes.
I hope you have an idea of what a paging operation is now *Smile

  14. Axe0,

I've been doing one troubleshooting chore or another and last night it was dealing w/BitDefender and others. I didn't yet run the disc check.
BD told me this morning that 10 isn't compatible - a little late. I reviewed AVs yesterday and decided to run a trial and buy myself thirty days to figure out what to do. I downloaded BitDefender, anyway, because the ratings are great. By the time I got around to installing it, their verification website was CLOSED. Nonsense, right?
Of course, I can't do anything w/o protection, and who knows how long it would take them to respond to this. They hadn't by this morning, so I then downloaded the TrendMicro trial. As I went to install it, I get a notification that Defender is off - click here to restart it - so I clicked. It opened. It needed updating and hadn't scanned since 5/18.

I can't explain how or why it came back, but it did. Not that it gets decent ratings, but somebody said it's better this year than last and at least I have one running protection, which is what I was desperately seeking.

I figured out while trying to uninstall everything, that even though I was waiting for BD verification, it was still protecting my computer. At least I utilized the scan last night.

I deleted many .exes in downloads. Why weren't those files cleaned out with Revo? That was many MBs.

Don't know where you are, but I was wondering about the CBS logs and if you have any idea what I should do with MS Cumulative Updates.

    Thank you

    I live in the Netherlands.

Bitdefender support is not good at all, they deleted some of my tickets that I created a few days earlier but I did not get any support, but the products are great.

You get always a message from Windows Defender whenever you uninstall a 3rd party AV, you can safely ignore the messages *Smile
Windows Defender has indeed improved since Windows 8.1, I have personally not tested it because I don't want to take the risk of malware but I trust on the word of many users around.

Some are large indeed. You used Revo Uninstaller for what program exactly and what executables have you removed?

I can read the CBS log for a small bit, as the logs from DISM, if you would upload them.

After all we've done currently, what problems are still present?
