Kids user accounts and family settings

Once the email was accepted by the child, it appeared shortly after as a child account on the PC under Family in Settings -> Family & other users.

Of course, I set it up from scratch on the PC instead of adding a child from an existing MS account on the PC.

Well its up and running, not sure its working!

One of them had his time limit reached and logged them off ok but the family report only showed 20 min not the 2 hrs it should have? Also really needs a quick override for the parent.

hi, just upgrade my 8.1 to 10, and the family safety thing that was so good in 8 is really bad in 10! Holy crap, I have kids under 10 and they really do not need and I don't want them to have email addresses! But it seems they need them to activate the family safety features!!! And I need to figure out how to link there local user accounts to a Microsoft account, what an absolute pain....and I'm still trying to figure it all out. I consider myself quite good with pc's, but this has really got me stumped. I feel your pain haffy. I've been reading through your thread looking for a straight cut way, buts it's all so vague, and Brink, I could feel Haffys frustration as you seemed to skirt around a straight answer. You are not in politics are you? Sorry, please don't take offence, it's just frustration comming out as I've searched through many forums over the past few days and have found very little in clear concise directions on setting up the family safety and linking/merging local and Microsoft accounts.

if I don't sort this out soon I may just have to revert back to 8.1 for the time being until I figure it all out. And to think I was so looking forward to 10 and its improvements.

  7. I created an account specifically to add my complaints about Windows 10 on this forum. I have 4 children ages 8, 6, 4, and 2. They all love playing PBS kids and watching Netflix on our touch screen. I simply want to limit their screen time, and I think it should be a very simple process.

In addition to all the nonsense described in the previous posts, they now require a credit card. They "have" to charge me $0.50 to create the email account for my very young children, whom I don't even want to have email accounts.

    Completely. Ridiculous.

Life is hard enough, why does this have to be so complicated.

Hello Mynmisklly, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

A Microsoft account is 100% free, and does not require a credit card.

Adding their accounts as a child in your Microsoft Family is also free.

I also was charged the $.50 each for 2 of my kids to set up Microsoft accounts at some point for "verification purpose". It is true.

I think you have completely missed the point of the OP.

Windows 8 and 8.1 used to allow a local account to be a child account. It was painful enough using internet explorer to manage family settings. But it worked.
Now a child account has to be linked to a Microsoft account. Ok, so both my kids have a Microsoft outlook.com account. However they will not allow simple password sign-in. Try telling my 5 year old her password is not 'cat' but now sdfsd$72@us2

she won't be able to just jump on, switch user from her brothers account and load her minecraft, something they both did seamlessly in Windows 8/8.1, again Microsoft just on another planet with this family stuff. Do any of the people there making these decisions have kids?

I will be downgrading to 8.1 until I see a fix for this.

Hello Ben, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

I was referring and replying to this part below. I've never been charged to setup and verify a Microsoft account.

  12. then I suspect that you haven't set up a child account.

They charge 50 cents per child account that you set up. You have to have a credit card.

You can always opt to lie when you create you 6 year olds email address so that they are 18 years old and not get any of the child controls.

I did set one up to be able to create the tutorial, and I wasn't charged anything or required to have a credit card.

Exactly where or at what step is this happening for you?

I did use an older MSA of mine to invite as a child though.
