I can! But you wouldn't like the answer! Dump Macrium Reflect entirely and go with a better imaging ware! That's the simple solution!

Example. Here I still run the 2010 Home edition of Acronis True Image which you already know about. The gui for back up is quite simple you either select the files and folders for partial backups or select the drive(s) or partition(s) you want to see included in a full system image backup if not using the Windows backup option which tends to take up more disk space!

The restoration includes everything from the drive(s) selected and sees all restored without a hiccup. With the 2016 now having become "Bloatware" by the description I am hearing however a look at the Paragon software lineup would be a consideration once the 2010 is no longer able to be used here.

Macrium on the other hand isn't working out for you there at all and would need to be replaced if not simply end up using the Backup option already in Windows. After a certain point you will likely come to the same conclusion since you are likely doing everything the right way but simply seeing how that program does things. Bad install of the software? That can't be ruled out either.

I was sick of Acronis and dumped it last year. Got real tired of having to buy a new version every time a new version of Windows was released.

I've used Aomei Back Upper which works well and Macrium Pro. I'll take a look at Paragon and see if going through the backup C:, clean install, restore C: works any better and if Shift Restart then works.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not sure Macrium can be blamed for this though. I've updated this computer from Win 7 Pro X64 to Win 8 Pro X64 to Win 8.1 Pro X64 and now Win 10 Pro X64, no clean install. Maybe the real fix would be to clean install Win 10 Pro X64 then restore just my data and reinstall software. It would take a few days probably but since I like messing with this stuff so much, maybe it's the right way to go. (Edit: No Windows 7, sorry).

I will try Aomei and/or Paragon before I clean install though just to see what happens.

  3. So far only one version bought here has worked out quite nicely for everything newer then XP! In fact I had to order a new usb enclosure for laptop drives since I see more images being made from those lately! and stored either on the second internal storage or one of the drives in external enclosures.

The 2010 Acronis T.I. Home edition still in use on as was on 7! I had been wondering if the 2015-16 versions were going to need a look when finding and half expecting that the 2015 build for the av software would be needed on 10 since the 2014 wouldn't even install. The 2016 just went onto a new 10 laptop picked up however.

Yet in all this time as far as any images created not one has even malfunctioned. As for the latest 2016 however as I was saying bloatware no thanks! I'll find a new one when needed! The 2010 however is still going strong! The Hard Disk Manager 15 is what Paragon has out at the moment you can look over. Paragon Software Group – Products for Home Users

No clean install yet???! That's a big No No there for sure! How can you put up with all the bugs? With the 10240 build in particular when the initial upgrades were taking place here "What a mess!" could heard as the Start button missing, menu items not opening, hardly anything but a few old pc game titles would even install which ruled the av software out of the mix when first seeing 10 get on the main build! That lead to the second upgrade to repair the first but wouldn't activate again during the first week. And now you no longer need to see the upgrade to 10 first! Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First - Windows 10 Forums

I think a fresh full Clean Install of 10 would be in order to see the best results for you there. That will take the good hour or so and then the time needed to get all of your usual programs back on but be worth it in the long run! Once you have that all set then your next step may trying more then one imaging ware out instead of counting on just one all the time? Hopefully you will see the clean install end up on a brand new primary as well where you have the say in the drive's partitioning scheme! *Wink

Macrium image restore changes partition layout

Up until now my computer has worked perfectly with a upgraded OS.

I finally gave up and did a clean install. After updates and restore of my data and install of all needed programs everything works as it should. I believe this could have been fixed if I was patient enough but as you said, it was time for a clean install anyway.

I'm installing programs as I go, only adding back the ones I actually use. My installed list dropped by a good 50 programs (so far).

Thanks all for you help on this.

  5. Well sometimes that will be what it boils down to! I noticed that some of the items I saw running generally pretty good back in May 2013 would no longer run first after seeing an older 2010 image restored since I never did get to replace that with a new one that had been made six months after the present main case was put together. When the restoration was still running into Windows Explorer hangs where having more then one window open would see WE freeze up at times I knew the time had come! Still have that June 2013 clean install running on the now second OS drive overdue for another there! Been too busy with 10 lately on two machines! *chuckle

As it turns out however that regardless of which version it has been so far having multiple browser windows open will also tend to run into the same type of freeze up program as does Explorer at times! Never been able to see that one completely resolved even with the clean installs! Bug built into Windows is what I surmise for that one! It won't happen constantly however but will come up suddenly at times.

By the time 10 came along I figure it would be right about 50 items lost between several game mods back with the 2013 clean install there as well as some expiring and no longer seen as well as various freebie type downloads for utilities and system tweakers I ended up ignoring while I may have them still tucked away on one of the storage drives. Excess Clutter Removed is what to call that when you skim the junk off the surface with each clean install.
