Windows 10: Microsoft Edge Insider extension now available in Microsoft Store

Stay informed with the latest Microsoft Edge Announcements, Features, Known Issues, and Fixed Issues directly in Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Edge Insider is the official extension for Microsoft Edge for Microsoft Edge Insiders.

This extension puts an icon on the Microsoft Edge toolbar that receives notifications about the latest Microsoft Edge Announcements, Features, Known Issues, and Fixed Issues.

Microsoft Edge Insider can also provide desktop notifications about important issues.

This extension is for Insider build channels ("canary", "dev", and "beta") only.

Microsoft Edge extensions now available to preview

Today, we’re happy to announce that the first set of extensions for Microsoft Edge are now available to preview via the Windows Insider Program. You can try out extensions starting in build 14291, which was released today to the Fast ring. Visit our new extensions page at Microsoft Edge Dev to learn more and try it out for yourself!

In keeping with our commitment to an interoperable web, we’re participating in the W3C Browser Extension Community Group’s efforts to define standardized extension APIs based on familiar web technologies. Today, we’re previewing our first step towards that goal.

This release supports a selection of preview extensions that have been validated by our team to work with the current set of supported APIs. Some planned APIs are not yet supported, but will be coming in future previews. We’ll share additional examples of extensions with future releases.

Loading extensions in Microsoft Edge

When we ship extensions to the public later this year, extensions will be available through the Windows Store, providing users a simple and secure discovery and installation experience. In this preview, extensions need to be sideloaded manually.

You can download the first preview extensions at our extensions page on Microsoft Edge Dev. We currently support the Reddit Enhancement Suite, Microsoft Translator, and Mouse Gestures extensions, with more on the way!

Sharing feedback

At this time, we’re focused on collecting feedback on the supported extensions and finding bugs in our extension APIs. We’re continuing to work with a group of co-development partners on the first extensions that will be available in the Windows Store later this year. We’ll share more details on our extension APIs and the path to the Store at Build 2016 and Microsoft Edge Web Summit, and we look forward to sharing more then.

Microsoft is very close to start testing Extensions on Edge with Windows Insiders in Windows 10. The software giant is actually expected to introduce Extensions for Edge with the upcoming Insider Preview build for Windows 10. We believe the company will release extensions from AdBlock, Pinterest, Reddit Enhancement Suite and more at the initial launch. Now, the folks over at WindowsBlogItalia today published screenshots of one of the first Extensions of Edge: Page Analyzer by Voloron.js.

The screenshots show off the Extension’s listing on the Windows Store, meaning that the Edge Extensions will be available via the Windows Store — which we already knew for a little while. For those wondering, Page Analyzer will simply allow web developers to test their website’s features, get feedback on best practices, etc.

Bringing Extensions to Microsoft Edge

I am excited to share that we have shipped the first preview release of Microsoft Edge with extensions support to Windows Insiders.

Since the beginning of the Microsoft Edge project, our roadmap has always included extensions in order to support a vibrant community of developer innovation on top of the browser, enabling new and interesting scenarios for our customers. As we have also shared, one of our highest priorities is to ensure that Microsoft Edge is the safest, most reliable and fastest browser we could build, and our experience over the past 20 years has taught us that poorly written or even malicious add-ons were a huge source of security, reliability and performance issues for browsers.

With this in mind, we have built Microsoft Edge so customers can add extensions to the browser with the confidence that they will operate as expected.

To ensure the highest quality experience for customers, and as we have done with Windows 10 since the beginning, we will introduce extensions first to our Windows Insiders and then roll them out more broadly to all Windows 10 users. Initially our Insiders will download and then sideload extensions for testing purposes, but ultimately we will make extensions available to all of our customers via the Windows Store to ensure the quality of the end-to-end experience.

The Windows Insider build will include three preview extensions: Microsoft Translator, an extension that automatically translates pages in over 50 different languages, a Mouse Gestures extension, and an early preview version of the popular Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES). Later this year customers will find popular extensions from partners like AdBlock, Adblock Plus, Amazon, LastPass, Evernote and more.

We are very excited to get these initial Microsoft Edge extensions into Insiders’ hands, so please, download the build, try out the preview extensions and send us feedback!
