Windows 10: Microsoft on managing your family’s digital life

As the product and strategy lead for the family audience at Microsoft and a mom of two, I spend a lot of time and energy thinking about the role technology and devices plays within families, including my own. This time of year, it is an especially important topic, as so many holiday wish lists have tech gifts at the top and it can be overwhelming to figure out how to manage.

With that in mind, earlier this month I sat down with a few experts, including Polly Palumbo, Ph.D. researcher and psychologist; Laurie Wolk, author and motivational speaker; our very own Henry Ipince, senior program manager at Microsoft; and 8th grader Jack. We had a great discussion and I’d love to share a few of my takeaways that might help you and your family.

Start with the skills you want your family to embody in the real world and set your online rules from there. Polly highlighted the idea that the skills that you want your kids to exhibit online are the same you expect from them offline, such as empathy, politeness and respect.

Have an ongoing dialogue – we understand parents often struggle with the desire to empower their children to learn and embrace all the amazing things technology enables kids to achieve, while also feeling a bit overwhelmed or lost about how to maintain a healthy relationship with technology. By having a conversation to understand the “why” behind things, you can then use tools such as screen time management to establish agreed-upon guardrails. And as Henry pointed out – there are often times when exceptions need to be made and an open dialogue keeps that door open.

Modeling behavior you want to see – it’s not just about telling kids the right things to do; parents need to be role models in practicing the behaviors they want to see. Laurie talked about how it’s important to recognize that we are all trying to figure this out together – by creating boundaries for all of us, we are able to hold each other accountable.

Trust and respect – empower your kids to set their own limits so they’re practicing limiting themselves, impulse control and judgment early on. Use tools as guardrails so kids develop the ability to make good choices and understand consequences. Polly explained how we should empower our kids to explain the whybehind their wants and needs for screen time and advocate for themselves. Give them the confidence and create a relationship of mutual trust and respect.

Microsoft has easy to use tools that can help – family settings on Xbox and Windows include screen time limits, content filters and purchase controls. These tools can help parents manage their kids’ responsible digital habits. Family settings offer more than 15 customizable tools that provide peace of mind across four key areas: screen time management, purchase limits, content filters and privacy. These tools span your Windows 10 and Xbox One devices, and even your Android phone using Microsoft Launcher. More information is available at Microsoft.com/family.

While it’s normal for parents to have questions and concerns about how their children use technology, our discussion reinforced the positive impact it can have on families – from helping shy kids become more independent and make friends to creating collaborative experiences outside of the classroom or even gaming as a family. One of my favorite learnings from the event was an analogy Laurie drew – you wouldn’t send a toddler into the pantry to eat whatever they want, whenever they want with no oversight. We can think about digital habits in the same way; it’s important to help our kids understand what’s healthy and how to make the right choices. At Microsoft, building tools to help families is an area on which we continue to focus, and a conversation that’s just getting started.

There’s a lot happening over the next few months. We’ll update this page regularly to give you the latest on Microsoft family.

Updates

Recent activity you can act on

On the redesigned recent activity page, you can see how your kids are spending their time on each PC, from the apps and games they’re using to the websites they’re visiting. And while you’re looking at their recent activity, you can decide whether or not something is right for them, and block or allow it right there.

Simpler settings
We’ve heard your feedback that some of the settings are too confusing and hard to use. So, we’ve made some changes to make it easier -

For web filtering, we reduced the options down to a few crucial ways to keep your kids safe when they're online. We now automatically block adult content in their web browsers, and if your kids are very young, you can allow them to access only specific web sites that you want them to see.

For apps & games, we've simplified how restrictions are set. You can choose an age setting for them, and based on that, they'll be able to only download apps and games that have been rated appropriate for their age.

For screen timers, we've taken the complex graphs and settings and simplified them down, while giving you the flexibility to easily control when your kids can use the PC.

We believe all these changes will make it easier for you to manage your kids settings on their Windows devices.

A new home for family
Family Safety is now part of account.microsoft.com, which is the single place to manage everything connected to your account. To manage your family and kids’ settings, go to account.microsoft.com/family. Right now some of the settings pages still live on the old site—some things will look the same, and some will look different—but over the next few months, everything will be updated and moved to account.microsoft.com/family.

Changes to linked accounts
If you’ve linked your kids’ Family Safety accounts, you’ll see that each of them are listed individually and that you now have to manage their settings separately for each device. We know this may be painful for some of you, but we’re doing this to make way for a simpler, better experience: roaming your child’s settings with their Microsoft account. We appreciate your patience as we make these changes. A few other notes:

If devices show up on your list that you no longer use, you can select “Remove” to get rid of them.

You’ll get a separate activity report email for each device.

Kids’ settings go with them
On Windows 10, you’ll need a Microsoft account in order to use Microsoft family whether you’re a part of a family as an adult or a child. When kids are added to a Microsoft family with a Microsoft account, any time they sign in to a Windows 10 device, their settings will be applied and their activity will be reported to the adults in their family. Adults can always turn off activity reporting or remove kids from the Microsoft family at account.microsoft.com/family.

Microsoft Family

Hi,

It could be because of the settings on the Family and Safety feature or the account you're using is added to a Family. With that being said, we suggest that you check if the account that you are using is a part of the
Family list. To check on it, go to Cortana
and search for Family Options.

To remove your account to the Family, you may follow the steps below:

Use the Adult account to log in using this link.

Click on the Family tab.

On the account that you want to remove, click More > Remove from family.

Then click Remove to confirm.

Microsoft Family feature, you’re restricted to view or access a website that is set to your account. To sort out your concern, we suggest that you manage your account by following the steps provided in this article on how to
remove members from your Microsoft family.
Once you’re on the page, you may proceed with the steps and complete the process. After completing the given steps, you may check if you’re able to use your account properly.

Note: The account that can remove you from the family member is the account that adds you as a child.
