    Moving to New Machine

    Greetings,

I hope you are all doing as well as possible in these tough times.

I am moving to a new machine. I will have 2 installations of Windows on separate partitions. One will be day to day stuff and the other music.

The day to day I will reinstall. That's simple. Music is a different kettle of fish. There are a great many programs installed. Some conventionally and some just with plugins copied to a folder. Most of the music programs are installed on a separate hard drive (not in C:\Program Files, etc). I really don't want to go through wiping and reinstalling everything.

I'm guessing that with the operating system gone, the installed programs (whichever drive they are installed on) will no longer have registry entries or application data, and in some instances this will be problematic.

What if I were to reinstall all of the software over top of existing installations? I know that sounds redundant. But it might save me having to reinstall a whole lot of data and libraries.

I would very much appreciate any help getting the best course forward. If I have to start from scratch, well I still have my old machine for production. But I'd rather not.

    All replies most appreciated,

    Graham

    :)

  2. Move HD to another machine.

    Hi Alan,

It is possible to move your hard disk from your old machine to your new machine if it is identical or has the same make and model, and operating system; however, there is no guarantee that you will not encounter any issues. To make sure, we suggest that
you uninstall all drivers from your old machine before transferring it to the new one.

    Regards.

Cannot move desktop to a new location in Windows 7

I've been trying to move the desktop location on a machine that runs Windows 7.

On my own machine (Windows 10), there's a "Location" tab in the desktop properties.

That tab is missing on the machine that runs Windows 7.

I came across the suggestion below in other threads, but it is not working for me. Any other suggestions on how to change to location or how to get the location tab to show?

    Thanks!

    1. Open the Registry editor (Regedit.exe)
    2. Browse to the location:

HKCU > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > User Shell Folders.
    3. In the right window pane select the required value (i.e. Desktop).
    4. Insert the new location for the folder to be stored.
    5. Close the registry editor and log off

      --> Didn't work.

    Moving to New Machine

    Moving Hyper-V to Another Disk

    1. Export the virtual machines to the drive where you want to move them (tutorial).
    2. When all VMs have been exported, delete them in Hyper-V Manager.
    3. When Hyper-V Manager is empty, not showing any VMs, import the previously exported VMs (tutorial). In Option One Step 6 of the tutorial, you need to select Register the virtual machine in-place, or if choosing Option Two in tutorial, select Step 2.
    Easy!
