  2. Good morning essenbe,
Made it as new user, administrator.
I'm going to start checking system protection, minidump, etc.
Would you kindly outline the steps I need to take now.
If I don't hear back from you, I may figure it out on my own.
    Best,
    /jdU

  3. Better check on this one: How are Restore Points handled with 2 users?
I just took a look at the configuration as User2 and it looked the same as it does as my (main) User1 (may utilization size is different, I'm going back to check it out.)
When I looked at configuration and hit OK I got a warning that all my old Restore Points would be deleted. I canceled.

Is the configuration the same, is the allocated space the same? I can't say with any certainty, but I wouldn't think it would be any different with 2 users as it is with 1. It is the system that is being protected, only 2 accounts this time, but the same system files.

  5. Yup, sounds right. I need to slow down. LOL
I was running out of space ... Like "Scroll Down Dummy!" This was failure to read the whole sentence.
I just changed it from 10% to 15% ... likely larger than needed, but while I go through this ...
Going back to User2 to see Memory Dump folder

A system restore does not affect user files, so user accounts should not matter. It only restores system files. You really only need to create a restore point when you change the system. For instance, before you install a program or a driver or something like that. Once you get to the max allocated space, it is going to start deleting older restore points to give it space for a new one. The idea is, you want the option to go back 2 days, a week or even 2 weeks. If something goes wrong with the system you want the option to go back to a point before that happened. Sometimes it can be several days or longer before you realize, 'Hey, something is definitely wrong'.

  7. Understand Restore Points. My daily sessions start with setting a Restore Point since I learned I never know when something will mess up. And always after a new software install and Windows Updates (knowing that the system makes one *before* the change.

    OK,
    I've it: C:\Windows\Minidump
    -
When I'm User2 I have to use a password going into system protection, etc.
I see both user names and a password field for the one that's highlighted. Guessing there's a switch for this. (?)

I'll try to get into Safe Mode as user2

    A couple things:
    1. Last night and just now trying to get into safe mode from user2 caused the "Calculator" on my task bar disappear; i.e. The icon was gone, the "button" was there, but when I clicked it, it opened and closed immediately. NBD in itself, but wondering what the underlying cause is, is a concern. In each case I ran a system restore to the respective morning restore points, and lost User2 in each case. (As I expected)
    2. Today, while in User2 I ran a restore point and verified it was there so I wouldn't lose User2 again. When I needed it (after trying to get into safe mode as User2) that restore point was gone. So I'm back at 7am this morning without any User2.
    3. Trying for safe mode in User2 I got the same error message "This App Can't Open" This time I clicked on OK and was in safe mode.
I can get into System, but there is no System Protection listed. I'm able to get into Advanced System Settings (FWIW).
    2 Screen photos are attached.

  10. Well, I guess that's better than the Clean Install I was thinking about ... re-installing *all* my programs. Yikes! *Sad
    -
OK, for now the only thing that concerns me is doing a complete uninstall of Norton. I've watched their support guys do this in the past and it was an interesting hunt for orphan files to manually delete. Maybe doesn't matter here ... or maybe it does?
    -
I'm going to grab my offsite external backup drive and do a lot of reading. I may not attack this until Monday.

Thanks very much for sticking with me! *Biggrin

Or maybe they should have an efficient uninstall program. This is not about Norton though. We recommend uninstalling any third party AV before a clean install. Most of them will mess up a repair install. Besides, the next step is a clean install which is certainly a reinstall.

Sure; makes good sense. I'm just not sure what Norton reported incorrectly. And/or are you suggesting I send them the DM Log?
    Thx

If they want it send it to them or tell them where it is. They have been notified several times before and said it had been corrected, but obviously not.

  15. Hello essenbe,
    [No rush; at your convenience.]

I think I need a bit of help with "disable Secure Boot in UEFI firmware setting"
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
    Leads me here:
UEFI Firmware Settings - Boot to from inside Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Which I suspect I may not be able to navigate to due to previous Advance Startup attempts.

Or Option Three for HP PCs:
Secure Boot - Enable or Disable in UEFI
    but what to do here?:

    Thanks,
