    Went into the control panel/network/adapter etc and removed 8.8.8.8 and set 1.1.1.1 on my router instead. Tested using the ping feature from the router, afterwards you can see a ~3/4/10ms gain with 1.1.1.1 at this moment in time. *Smile

    New Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 fastest, privacy-first consumer DNS service

    This thread is a bit over my head. I'm just learning about this after reading an Engadget article. I'm not familiar with how DNS lookups work, or if I should set the IPv4 or IPv6 protocol. But I set the preferred DNS server to 1.0.0.1 (1.1.1.1 doesn't connect) for IPv4 in my W10 Ethernet adapter settings, and nslookup confirms:

    Default server: 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com
    Address: 1.0.0.1

    Not understanding much of this, I then tried setting preferred and alternate DNS servers in both IPv4 and IPv6 settings:

    IPv4
    Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
    Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1

    IPv6
    Preferred DNS Server: 2606:4700:4700::1111
    Alternate DNS Server: 2606:4700:4700::1001

    While What's My DNS Server? determined I was connected via Cloudflare, nslookup saw no default server, returning:

    Default Server: UnKnown
    Address: 2606:4700:4700::1111

    I'll just stick to the 1 setting in IPv4 of 1.0.0.1 for now. I'd really appreciate it if someone could briefly explain what I'm not understanding by trying to set all 4 DNS server settings.

    Thanks for that Callender. As you suspected, the IPv6 test shows my ISP doesn't support it. I think I've had both IPv4 and IPv6 settings for my adapters going all the way back to WinXP. But it seems DNS server addresses have always been set by default to be obtained automatically, and I don't think I've ever had any problems. Nice to have 1 more tool in my Internet quiver of privacy tools.

    EDIT: When I have IPv6 set to defaults (obtain DNS server address automatically) and have IPv4 set to:

    Preferred DNS Server: 1.1.1.1
    Alternate DNS Server: 1.0.0.1

    nslookup returns this:

    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
    Default Server: UnKnown
    Address: 1.1.1.1

    If I switch them to:

    Preferred DNS Server: 1.0.0.1
    Alternate DNS Server: 1.1.1.1

    nslookup returns:

    Default Server: 1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com
    Address: 1.0.0.1

    As my browsers fail to connect to 1.1.1.1, I'll leave the preferred DNS server set to 1.0.0.1

    Never use ISP DNS they are notoriously bad (at least here in the UK), I'm liking this one so far but I don't think there is much in it between this one and google which I was previously using.

    I would recommend, yes. With this or Google, and others, you avoid an ISP "trick" where invalid addresses (the 404 error) are possibly diverted by the ISP to serve their purposes (marketing, ads, etc.). I've been running this now for a few days, and it's seems quicker than Google, but then again it gets to be subjective. They are easy to flip back and forth, though, so try it out and get your own feeling. One thing I would recommend that I do, habit mostly, is after changing run ipconfig /flushdns at an Admin command prompt. It clears DNS cache so no possible conflicts or leftovers. They usually expire in 24-48 hours, but it's a quick step.

    I am staying with OpenDNS. For my location it is the fastest of all.

  14. I am using Cloudflare still for one reason. I noticed the day after I started using it, that my card feed on my android did not reflect half of what I saw on the PC earlier in the day. Google was using my DNS to fill my card feed. I read the card feed later at night when off the PC. It sure is nice not to read about the same stuff unless I google something. *chuckle
