Windows 10: Newegg Windows 10 price & release date

Pretty much the same scenario as Scramjet...
I have three retail copies of Windows 7 installed on my computers. If I do the free Windows 10 update on any of them does that turn them into OEM versions and therefore not available for transfer to new computers?
If this is so, it is an important consideration when considering updating.

 

Win 8 is pretty resilient on driver change so it could mix and match a lot better than windows 7. If network is working appropriate drivers are found, downloaded and installed automatically.

 

I was suggesting that too others who are building a new machine, buy 7 Pro you get 10 Pro for free and you can still go back to Seven if you don't like it.

 

If you do the free upgrade it would be for the life of the computer. A new motherboard would be considered a new computer.

 

I would assume your scenario would be the case; somewhere along the line, you would either get a new product key to Windows 10 or would use your Windows 8.1 product key to reinstall.

Failing an ISO being available, you could probably create an ISO from the Install.esd file.

Basically, yes. Once you upgrade to Windows 10, it seems that it will be good "for the supported life of the computer." What we don't know yet is what the "supported life of the computer" is; Microsoft may (or may not) have figured it out yet, but they haven't told us if they have or haven't. *Sad

The bright side of the coin is that if your computer crashes and you can't fix it and have to buy a new computer, Windows 10 will almost surely be installed on it. *Smile Building another computer to put the existing license on probably won't be acceptable by Microsoft.

So what you are saying is that if someone should have the misfortune of losing a MB that person would have to buy a new copy of Win10 and then if in 6 months that MB is flakey and it crashes and it has to be replaced then he must buy another new copy of Win10 because it is a different MB? That is ludicrous. Nobody in their right mind would do that lol.

I sure hope MS will clarify this because I will not be upgrading to Win10 until I know. I know I have done it with Win7 and Win8 so why would I even think about throwing away money for the same OS I already have. Not a good feeling *Sad

 

I agree, but that's the way it is. Of course, one would have to be extremely unlucky to have that happen. About six or seven years ago, I gave an old (about five years old) XP computer I had built to a friend who couldn't afford one. It's still running today, despite her five year old grandson doing his best to destroy it. *Smile

I have always built my own systems. I put an OEM copy of Windows on an early build because I didn't know it would be forever tied to that particular computer; I got lucky and nothing happened. I was ready to upgrade to a new build and started over, upgrading the motherboard and RAM, but using "leftover" parts for the rest of the build. This time I put a Retail copy of Windows on. That way, if something happens and I have to replace a major part, a call to Microsoft licensing, explaining why the "new" computer, will be the only thing I'll have to do.

I no longer build my own systems; I buy them off the shelf, so to speak. These systems (1 desktop and 3 laptops) all have OEM copies of Windows on them because they were built by an OEM manufacturer. One of these laptops is a replacement for a laptop that crashed and burned due to an irreparable graphics "card" malfunction. I bought the computer with Vista installed. If Vista had still been on that computer, I would have lost my license, because it was an OEM computer. Since I had replaced Vista with a retail copy of Windows 7 and then upgraded to a retail copy of Windows 8.1, I could still use the license to Windows 8.1.

Am I making sense so far? Since the Windows that was on the laptop that crashed and burned was a retail copy, I can put it onto another computer if I wish. However, since the replacement computer already had Windows 8.1 installed, I now have an extra copy of Windows 8.1 retail.

What I think will happen is that if you have a "store bought" (OEM ) computer and you upgrade to Windows 10, it will be for the life of that computer. The license will be the same as if you had bought the computer with Windows 10 installed on it.

If you have a self built computer with a retail copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 on it, I believe the license will be the same as if you had bought the computer with Windows 10 installed by an OEM.

We don't know yet, but if Retail Licenses are available, I would expect that the same license as always would apply. Do I know this for sure? Absolutely not, because Microsoft still hasn't given us all the details.

This is still a guessing game and pretty much an educated guess, but still a guess.

 

I thought motherboards can be replaced if damages or fails. It is just upgrading to newer or different type of motherboard that not allowed for OEMS. The reason I say this, is dell replaced my motherboard under warranty and it didn't require re-activation, when I did another clean install of windows 7 using the dell re-installation disk ( dell sent me one earlier). If I every have to use the key on the back of the machine, I may need to call in for activation and tell them my motherboard was replaced under warranty in 2014.

If dell used a different motherboard they would had to provide me with retail version of windows 7 sp1 or later.


I am curious how a legit oemslp will be upgraded to windows 10 even though I am not going to do that.

 

I'm sure they replaced it with a Dell OEM motherboard. It may even have been a exact replacement board of the original.

That they say they offer genuine keys for cheaper price. Here on this bonanza he is offering a OEM Windows 8 key for $36 USD. They are usually this cheap because they keys are hardware locked. So if you change the motherboard or it dies on you, you are SOL. Or all these sites on the web for "cheap keys" are a scam?

I don't think MS will change anything with licensing policy they stuck to for years, not too different from upgrades from the past but not with reduced price for certain period of time (this time a year) but giving free exact type of license you had before.
So, type of license you had before, you'd have after upgrade. Anything more (like converting OEM license to retail ) and keeping it forever would be a big bonus for us which MS is unlikely to give.
So, all you have to know is which way you got your Windows 7/8/81, you'll have same thing but will be called Windows 10. That system has been in place for long time now and their machinery to enforce it doesn't have to change.

not sure about your location but at the moment inflation is currently NEGATIVE or just over O% in a lot of EU and EEA places -- so we should have LOWER prices.

Actually it's a moot point for me anyway as I can upgrade from some W7 and W8.1 installations. (I wonder if they will throw in XP too as there's still loads of XP users out there - maybe a FREE W10 will make them finally switch.

Inflation or not, money is loosing value all the time, you can't buy decent set of tires for cost of a car 25 years ago. That price of windows would be a years wages in good part of the world. 7 years ago, before pension, I was eating whole month for 100 Euro, now I can't have good breakfast during same period.
